We have similar taste except Slash and Kirk Hammet. I don't think they should be up there with other guitarists. I don't know somehow I think Dimebag, Kirk and Slash are overrated. No offense...

You know who's underrated big time. Alex Lifeson from Rush.

Ughhhhh I know there is gonna be disagreement on this one and it's kinda off topic but Rush as a whole I don't get. There all very talented but just throwing a bunch of talented guys together who are all doing their own thing on songs does not equate to good music. The only Rush song I can listen to is Tom Sawyer and even then it's only the first 1-2 minutes.

You're such a product of Guitar Hero, it's horrible. Rush was/is an amazing band.

Nope. I don't like Rush that's all. Their music is so random. It doesn't progress properly IMO. Yeah they are good for a 3 man band but their songs sound like a jam session, albeit a good one.

Haha!!! Just like I don't get Dream Theater. Many people say DT is good, but I don't get it. I think Rush is just like that to you. Each member is very talented and their songs are tight. Not many trios can pull great shows like Rush.

I like the lyrics. Try some of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrAzSs7IvgI

There was unrest in the forest,There was trouble with the trees,For the maples wanted sunlightAnd the oaks ignored their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,(And they're quite convinced they're right)They say the oaks are just too loftyAnd they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelingsIf they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maplesCan't be happy in their shade.

There was trouble in the forest,And the creatures all had fled,As the maples screamed "Oppression!"And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a unionAnd demanded equal rights."The oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light."Now there's no more oak oppression,For they passed a noble law,And the trees are all kept equalBy hatchet, axe, and saw.

My uncle has a country place, that no one knows aboutHe says it used to be a farm, before the motor lawAnd on sundays I elude the eyes and hop the turbine freightTo far outside the wire, where my white-haired uncle waits.

Jump to the groundAs the turbo slows to cross the borderlineRun like the wind,As excitement shivers up and down my spineDown in his barnMy uncle preserved for me, an old machine ---For fifty-odd yearsTo keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining carA brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished timeI fire up the willing engine, responding with a roarTires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime...

Wind in my hair ---Shifting and drifting ---Mechanical music ---Adrenalin surge ---

Well-weathered leatherHot metal and oilThe scented country airSunlight on chromeThe blur of the landscapeEvery nerve aware

Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainsideA gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wideI spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly raceGo screaming through the valley as another joins the chase

Drive like the windStraining the limits of machine and manLaughing out loudWith fear and hope, Ive got a desperate plan

At the one-lane bridgeI leave the giants strandedAt the riversideRace back to the farmTo dream with my uncleAt the fireside...

My Rush collection. Worth every penny.

Hands down the best guitarist mentioned in this thread. Segovia is the closest thing to having a Paganini-esque individual that lived during my lifetime.

(two of the 4 gods of guitar in the 80s)
It saddens me that it took like 5 posts before steve vai was even mentioned. Also Joe Satriani, and John 5. John 5 is Marilyn Mansons guitarist, but is way beyond that, just imagine Steve Vai skill level with a southern influence.

A lot of excellent choices here but one was missed.

From the country-western genre Roy Clark was unbelievable in his prime. He could make a guitar talk to you.

lets see..

paul gilbert (saw him at G3)joe satrianni (saw him at G3)yngwie malmsteensaw john petrucci too at G3, he is very good although he isn't my favoritemichael angelo batiojason becker

i studied music 2 years in college, been playing for about eight. i can tell you, it's an never ending argument on who is the best guitar player, paul gilbert can't do what malmsteen does, nor can malmsteen do paul's stuff either(malmsteen probably have his doctrine in music). it really narrows down to the style and what you like.

one thing i want to say though, why did so many people list kirk hammet lol, don't get me wrong i'm a huge metallica fan, but as a guitar player, kirk sounds exactly like he did 20 years ago, he just won't get any better lol. he probably have alraedy reached his peek
