As I was told by America's Tire & my own research.  I installed a set of Mohave (Kelly)whitewalls and they look pretty stock.

Originally, the 320 1/2 ton came with 5.50 x 14 tires and the 1 ton came with 6.00 x 14.  Those are both taller than a 185/70-14 or 195/70-14.   I still have the orignal spare for my truck which is a 6.00 x 14.  It measures 25 7/8" in diameter while the 195/70-14's I have on the truck measure 23" in diameter.  205/70-14 would probably be closer to stock but they, and the stock size, both look too tall for my tastes.

thanks for all the info, that helped a lot. i was thinking a 195/75/14 was close. is the 75 series taller than a 70 or wider ?  your right though, i don't want a tire that is too tall. mike

A 75 series is taller than a 70 series.  So a 195/75-14 would be closer to the stock size but still a little shorter and wider.  That 6.00 x 14 is tall and skinny.

I have been watching this thread, because I am needing to get new tires for my PL-521.  The wheels are 4 inches inside the beads, and 14 inches in diameter.  same sized wheels as a 320, I think.    After talking to a couple of different tire stores, one store recommended not using a 185 tire on a four inch wheel, and here is the odd thing.  they had 185 tires to sell to me, but they did not have a narrower tire that would fit.  In other words, the guy lost a sale, in order to give me good advise.
A 185 tire will go on a 4 inch wide Datsun wheel.  The sidewalls will be pulled in more than the tire is designed for, and the tread will be crowned too much.  the tire will wear out in the center before the edges of the tread will.  You can even out the tire wear by running a lower tire pressure, but that will reduce the gas mileage.

that's good advice. i am still tire shopping. does that mean that the 195 tire is better suited for the stock rim ? mike

A 195 tire is even wider than a 185, and the problem would be worse.  A 175 tire is recommended for a minimum wheel width of 4 1/2 inches.  Ideally, a 165 tire would be about right.  Try to find a 165 14 inch tire, they are not common.
Remember when these trucks were built, radial tires were exotic sports car tires.    Also keep in mind these trucke were designed to be a utility load carrying vehicle.   The original tires, and wheels were designed to carry a heavy load.  Not to look "cool".
