Timing light issue/ question..... ka24de

OK well right now i'm just trying to time in my ka24de swapped s13 pignose, and am having a few issues/questions.

1) For some reason the timing light only seems to work sporatically, like at random. Sometimes it will flash and sometimes it won't. It does this with 2 different timing lights, and when we try them on other cars, they seem to work just fine.....

2) Should the 3rd wire from the timing light be hooked to the coil wire or to the #1 plug wire?

3) Is there something i'm doing wrong causing the light to randomly want to work?

ok thanks does anyone have any idea about what would be causing the weirdness with the timing guns though?
