It does sound a little shady. Make a bill of sale, basically a written contract that says that he agrees to sell you the car for the amount agreed upon, that he told you everything regarding the history of the car that he knows, that you agree to buy the car, etc etc. I'm not sure if it's possible, but maybe you could get it notarised so it becomes a legal binding contract. If he says "I only accept cash" tell him, "I only pay in certified check, unless my lawyer, a supreme court justice, my third grade teacher, and at least 3 federal marshalls are present". Document everything and have a witness, even if it's just a friend (eventhough the federal marshalls and suppreme court judge would be better

). Get the title and run the VIN number before handing over a cent. I bought my car from the "inner city". Let's just say it's something I won't do again for personal safety reasons, but I typed up documents, requested all reciepts, title, etc. I had him sign the bill of sale i typed up, I had his girlfriend sign it as a witness, I signed it, and my friend as my witness sign it. Excessive? yes, but i wanted to cover my *** on this one particularly becuase he said "cash only " too. But I told him that I have the money right now and I would only give it in certified check form and that he could take it or leave it AND i got the car for $1500 below his asking price

Moral of the story....DOCUMENT EVERYTHING AND COVER YOUR ***!
