Acoustic or electric?

If electric, is the amp and guitar included in the $400?

What kind of music are you most interested in playing?

You can get some pretty good guitars for sub $400, but it'd be sweet to narrow down the selections a bit.

As far as purchasing, I have had great service with MusiciansFriend.com

It's best to go to some local guitar shops and play the model you're interested in, and then either try and get them to match MF's price, or order it from the website.

Free shipping over $100, and if you decide it's not what you wanted you can send it back within 45 days of the shipping date.

Just remember when shopping, that EVERY guitar will feel, play and sound a bit different, even if it's the same make/model/brand. This applies much more with acoustics than electrics in my experience.

Seriously though Agile guitars are the best for your money, I played a Baritone with an EMG 81/81 set up into a single rectifier. It owned, a lot. For a $350ish guitar it was amazing *feeling wise*. Sound wise as well but that was probably due to emg sex.

If you don't go that route I'd look into Schecter or Ibanez.Fender quality has dropped as far as their mexican strats go so I'd stay away.

And before we start listing specific models...

It's funny that you mentioned guitarcenter.com. IIRC guitar center is owned by musicians friend, or the other way around. Their prices are the same, lol.

Electric

Likely not. While I'm learning I'll probably play sans amp. Keep everyone else sane LOL.

Everything. From Stevie Ray Lewis to Disturbed, Metal to Blues, I love it all. In the end I aspire to be a legendary shredder so really there is no one type of music I'll be playing, just an end goal. Dunno if that is an answer or not but it's all I have for you guys now. Sorry.

Hopefully that'll give you guys a better picture of what I want.

Did you mean Stevie Ray Vaughan?

I agree with all of the above. I told you 80% of it anyway.

All mahogany body, set neck, decent pickups and Ibanez quality. For 300 bucks. Perfect starter guitar. Nuff said, Ryon.

I bought my sons Dean used from a Sam Ashe store and was able to talk them down ~30%. They will haggle.

Yeah, Sam Ashe has a pretty kickin selection of gear. I was going to buy a talk box and wah pedal for a friend of mine, but, alas, I couldn't because I only have a JDM credit card and couldn't use it.

Wait, maybe I have been outta the loop for quite a while, but isn't Floyd Rose a brand name for a double locking, floating tremelo? I really don't think they actually make guitars, do they?

As far as shredding, you can shred on just about any guitar as long as it's set up right, intonation and all. Granted, I can't speak from experience, but I have been around guitarists for may years and have seen them do some seriously sic stuff with Strats, Les Pauls, hell, even a Rickenbacher (SP???)

Yes, Floyd Rose makes bridges, not guitars. Their floating bridge design has been licensed from many companies for use on their guitars.

I like Fender, Ibanez, Epiphone, and Schecter for a cheap beginning guitar. But get out to a store like I told you, you dont want to buy a guitar you've never played before. Get whatever you are comfortable with that's in your price range. You can't play guitar well if you cant get comfortable.

EDIT: I don't know how cheap the lower ESP's go for, but if there is one in your price range try it out. When I bought my guitar it was either my Jackson or an ESP. Sometimes I wish I had gotten the ESP, but I'm pretty happy.
