you should return the engine to your lawn mower and get a 350 small block

Well guys, a colleague of mine told me yesterday that he saw a Z24 with 5 fwd transmission at our most expensive used parts truck yard. An actual Z24. Will check it out and decide on what to do. Listening to you all, I'm strongly considering shelving the plan for the Z20 and go with the Z24. Not sure about parts yet but can find parts for the Z20 easily.

Well I'm sorry to disappoint you guys, but I will be sticking to the original plan with the Z20. It will cost me $500 with a parts engine, where as the Z24 would be costing me $1200 and I'm not sure about parts. So I'll be showing the works soon.

Made a new contact and got two Z18ET (one needs some work has no turbo) and a 4 speed automatic transmission for $ 800.00 US from an 86 910. Forgot the camera so I cant show the donor car.

Delays. The sump from the spare engine is for the truck but is severely corroded. Will have to cut the 910 sump. As this sump is deep the pick up from the parts engine won't go down into the oil so I'll have to adjust this also.

Can you build a franken motor? like an L20 block with z22 internals type of thing. Do you have access to those motors?

Specifically, "Big Bore 2.3L KA24 pistons into a bored Z20/Z22/L20B block. The small 2.8cc dish area of the KA24 pistons helps to preserve compression ratio even with the low piston deck height. Compression ratio with a open chambered U67 head is 9.9:1 or use dished Z24 pistons and peanut chambered head for 8.9:1 compression ratio. Parts: Z22 crank, KA24 pistons, Z22S/ L20B rods in a +2mm bored Z22 block or +4mm Z20/L20B block. s/2+r+p= 92/2+145.9+34.0= 225.9 mm piston deck height: -1.55mm below deck "

f your going to take the Z22 motor and put KA24 pistons in it be sure you get your block from a Z22S ('81-'82 720 pickup). The reason is HUGE! The water jackets on these year motors were further away allowing for the larger bore. Any other ones will give you overheating problems. One more thing. LOOK for the block to be cracked out at the middle stud hole for the head. People tend to bolt the head back down without tapping out and cleaning it. The head bolt then bottoms out and cracks the block right where the water jacket is....bad news....but you must look. If you get lucky you'll find one. I bought my block off of a guy who bought, I think 5 before he found a good one.

There are very few L20s here and even fewer Z22s. I only know of one Z24 here. The Z18 and Z20 are more common. The plan for the spare engine is to rebuild using the Z18 block with Z20 rods, SR20 pistons and a LZ head if I can source it. The rods are negligible. They may or may not be used. If used I'll be using a Felpro 3mm head gasket. If it works I'll post the entire build step by step.

Problems, problems and more problems. Got the sump and pick up corrected. The air con compressor bounces on the chassis, got a smaller compressor, the down pipe for the turbo cant fit because of the chassis. Well the spare engine had the exhaust manifold for the turbo set on top so tried to remove the original manifold and broke 5 of the 8 bolts holding the manifold. The head is now in the machine shop trying to extract the broken studs. Bought the wrong fuel pump, needs one with a surge tank to prevent stalling on hard cornering. Returned the one I bought, luckily the parts shop owner and I are good friends. Changed all the fuel lines and most of the wiring is completed. Hope to have Funtasia back by the first week in December. The installer has all the photos. Will post as soon as I get them.

Still no news from the mechanic. Looks like I'm going to have to drive to the shop and plat bad a**. The laurel is going to be sold soon. The interested guy is coming to check it tomorrow afternoon, he likes it more than me and is willing to pay $US 700.00 more than I paid for it.

Well here's the latest. The down pipe from the turbo passes too close to the fire wall and the exhaust may touch the chassis or the torsion bar in the area of the transmission. Excuses, excuses. I told him to complete the swap, call me when he is ready to start and let me address those issues personally. Sorry still no photos.

The Laurel is gone. Took it off my hands for $3200.00 US. The wingroad needs work so I'm starting the repair before I get back the 720.

After getting some info from Pezi, I've decided what to do with the spare engine. I'm checking dimensions right now but it looks like - Z18 short block, SR20 turbo pistons, KA head, T4 turbo to begin with. I found a LZ head in Australia but it will cost $3200 US plus shipping. That's why the KA is going to be used.

Went to witness the start up on Saturday. Told him to wait until I correct the down-pipe issue. The down-pipe is touching the fire wall so I took the original manifold to custom fab a new one. Once thats done I'll be up and running.

Started the fabrication of the new manifold. You'll need some special tools

and raw material.

will post progress as I go along.

Completed the installation of the fuel pump in the tank. The fuel pump will be changed soon to one which has a surge tank attached to it. Will post pics of the tank soon. The Manifold is also complete with the down pipe and delivered to the mechanic. Here's some pics.

Did not take into consideration the exhaust wires. After we start I'll address the angle of the turbo flange.

More to come soon.

Got a call from the mechanic yesterday. The fuel tank has severe rust inside and needs to be cleaned and coated. Thats another 65 dollars for the cleaning and coating. There was only minor rust in it when I installed the pump.
