My alt/water pump belt is sqeaking bad. At least I'm assuming its the belt anyway. it seems to be pretty tight, and my mechanic neighbour told me to put some soap on it. Tried that, and it worked at first. Now its back. I tried it again, and no luck. Its squeaking like a mofo. Its bad at idle, and its bad for about 2 or 3 minutes, but thats about it. IF I'm at WOT around 2500-3000 rpm, it will go away completely. When I downshift, it always squeaks though.

Im right about to go out and buy belt wax from canadian tire to see if that fixes it. Could it be something more serious tho? Water pump? Alt? Car only has 45000 origonal clicks, so I'm hoping not...

Thanks for the help.

Have you tried just buying a new belt? They're like $10.

Just making sure its not something serious here like a water pump. belt wax stuff kinda fixed it today. Will do it for about the first 10 seconds of driving. I'll put more on, maybe tighten it a little more...

its only a few days old so ill post...

to change a belt...you just loosen the tensioner with a 12mm and it will loosen right? and if it wont budge, do i use a breaker bar of some sort? cuz i tried last night since my belts squeal like pigs but the alternator will not move ... this applies to the PS belt too right?

theres a bolt that holds the alternator in place on a black bracket. Take it out, then u can move the alternator and take out the belt..

there is also a large 14mm bolt on the bottom of the alternator. Although not 100% necessary I usually loosen this also.

Take the belt that you have to Advanced Auto parts and fined one that is just a little smaller and put it on, my did the same thing and thats what I did and guess what no more squeaking. I will go and check the belt size for you and post it.Go to Advancedauto.com and type in this number in search 5040330 That should be the Dayco poly-cog belt and that is the one that I use and it works perfectly nice and tight no squeaks
