The 33.3 GB that my computer (HP Compaq Presario 5000- Windows XP) came with originally are now down to about 450MB. I bought a 350GB internal hard drive today and am planning on installing it 2morrow. I was researching on how to install it, and have found 2 options: 1. Installing it as a MASTER, or 2. Installing it as a SLAVE. I was originally planning on just replacing the old one and copying my old files on to the new one. However, it was brought to my attention that I would need to format the new Hard Drive with the XP disc, which I cannot find! So, now I'm thinking of going with the SLAVE option. However, this would require changing to old HD setting to a Primary position and then installing the new 1 in the SLAVE position. All this is rattling my brain a bit. So, that is Y I turn to you. How in the WORLD do this?

Is your new drive a Seagate? They make a very, very nice program (available on their web site) for "moving" from one disk to another. I just did it to my son's computer - changed from a 40GB disk to a 500GB disk ... ruuning Vista - and it went incredibly smoothly!

I do not know if this Seagate program will work on a non-Seagate replacement drive! But, may do no harm in trying (please back up on to some other media first regardless!!)!

Goto http://www.seagate.com, under the Support page, under the downloads link, get the program called DiscWizard and see if this works for you. It has all kinds of options to re-partition the new disk, etc., etc., etc. Read the instructions carefully before you get started to see what you can do. Of course, if one particular mechanism does not work the way you expected ... just do it again!

BTW, I am assuming that this is an IDE drive, by the way, since Serial (or SATA) drives are handled quite differently!

Setting a drive to be Master or Slave means (generally) moving a pin jumper from one position to another - but, it does depend on the type of cable you have. This jumper is located at the back of the drive, typically near the power connector - often in between the power connector and the data connector.

If the IDE cable has two drive connectors on it and the ribbon cable goes straight from one to the other, then set your main drive to MASTER and the second drive to SLAVE. The specific jumper positions for this would be on a sticker on the drive typically - marked as "M" and "S", or some such similar combination of letters.

If the IDE cable has some wires "twisted" between the connectors, then you will need to use what is called the "Cable Select" settings - both drives usually have this as an option for the jumper locations. However, note that this is a rare situation - most IDEA cables today are NOT twisted in this way.

The Seagate web site has some diagrams showing this (also on their drive installation manuals that you may be able to download).

Good luck, and I am hope I am not too late with this info!

Just set it for CS, run your windows from your main drive and run everything else from your new hard drive. It will run faster that way...although you might not even notice.

Since its an HP they normally set their hard drives to CS, (cable select) which deals with what position your have each hard drive on. The middle would be considered slave, and the front would be considered master.
