I want to start off by thanking you all for the wealth of knowledge you all have bestowed upon people like myself. I have learned a great deal about my ride and saved a lot of money in the long run as a result from the DIY info.

I am having a tach issue with my '97 j30. The tach jump all over the place 90% of the time. What I mean is, the tach reads between 3,200 and 9,000 when driving under normal conditions. The tach acts like it has a heart beat. I drive to work 30min each way and the tach jumps the entire way. The only time it subsides is if I am driving the car for 2 hours or more, and is accurate at that point.

I have pulled the instrument cluster out and cleaned all the contacts with no improvement. I am thinking it must be the tach sending unit. Any unit idea where that is? Anybody else experienced this issue?

It has been doing this for the last 6 months and really want to get the issue fixed as the car is cherry other than this issue.

Thanks again.

No, the check engine light is not on. I also used scanner to check to see if it is throwing a code. The scanner did not detect any issues.

Were you able to fix this issue? I have the same problem with my J (97 J30, 113K miles). I took it to the dealer and they quoted me $1300 (i think) for replacement. Should I bother, if it doesnt affect my driving and is not damaging the car?

Please dont pay 1300 to fix your tach, if it is only the needle malfunctioning if will not effect your driving. But save your money until you find what is realy wrong.
