I don't believe there's an aftermarket kit that does what you're suggesting. You could try cutting and splicing the wires, but I'm not sure how well that will work. As an alternative, may I suggest reading this thread: Aftermarket stereo w/ Surround View.

Hi I want to replace my stock stereo in my rogue 2016 s model with a 2017 stereo with a nav. The wiring harness is different from the two units. Is there a wiring harness that can be purchased that will allow the nav to work. I was browsing through some of the older post and it looks the harness was available.

The stereo from a 2016 vs 2017 is literally the same interface and software and maps. You are better off getting the 2016 SV headunit with navi instead of the 2017. And as you said there are posts that indicated that the wiring harnesses will work on the same model years (2014-2016). But, do you really need the Nissan OEM navigation? You got a phone that gets Google Maps, which has lifetime updates, whereas the Rogue's Navi, you have to pay $129 for a new map update via SD card, (2018 and newer has free OTA map updates).

I have nearly the same question as OP. I have 2015 with Nav installed, it’s horrible. I want to replace it with 2018 or 2019 to get CarPlay.

Is there a guide existing how to do this? I was hoping it was going to be a perfect swap but now I’m concerned it may be more complicated.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Edit: installer.com seems to sell the same wiring harness for both years. Maybe it is as easy as plug and play? Has anyone does this already?

2015 Rogue SV w/ premium nav and sensors. I’m looking to upgrade to 2018 model for CarPlay. Is there a link for purchasing the right wiring harness adapter?

(This should be a sticky if there is one.)

Has anyone tried to install a newer head unit into an older 2nd generation Rogue to gain Android Auto/Carplay capabilities yet? I assume it's a simple plug and play but wondering if anyone knows

Thanks

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The topic has come up before, but I don't think it was these exact model years. There was a major mid-year upgrade for the 2017 Rogue, resulting in the 2017.5 model. That seems to be when Nissan made changes to the audio components, meaning the newer ones are not a simple plug-n-play for 2014 to 2017 models.

Here's the backside of a 2015 OEM head unit.

Thanks for the reply.

Very interesting and helpful photos thank you. From my engineer eyes they still appear to be similar connections just using different platic connectors and moved around to make it seem it's not compatible.

If I were a betting man, I bet I could take the pins out and re-pin some connectors to the new 2017.5 connectors and it would work just fine.

Hmmm. Maybe a new project for the right price on used radio :)

Sounds like a plan. Just so you know, Nissan lists eight (8) different Controller Assy-Navigation (head units) for the 2019 Rogue. A few of them were only used in the S and SV models. Most were replaced by model number: 2591A-8FM0C.

New member,
PLEASE EXCUSE THE LONG WRITE UP
but I do have very exciting news on this front.
I just finished this conversion. Still waiting on an antenna adapter for radio, but that’s not all that important to me.
What you’ll need

1) 19 radio with nav
2) 40 pin female side connnector for the 19 radio. (picked on up at the scrapper out of a 04-07 Murano comfort access module that sits on the passenger side behind the glovebox. Cut it off with a good chunk of wiring to make a conversion harness.)
3) The 20 pin female side connector for the 19 radio. Again, cut it out of a scrapper car with as much wiring as I could. Relatively easy to find as I believe it’s in every Nissan from 07 and up.
4) 20 pin aftermarket radio adapter. Super easy to track down. Again 07 and on is pretty generic.
5) the antenna adapter, they decided that between 17-18, to make the antenna connector slightly more narrow. This doesn’t allow the antenna connector to fit. I have new ones on order that I will modify to make work.
6) 24 pin male side connector. Initially I picked up a piece from digikey, I used loose pins, heatshrinked them and put them in their designated location. Problem when trying to instal the harness, is that the pins tried backing off. So I ordered a Axxess AS-toycam3 Toyota conversion harness for rear view camera retention. Same 24 pin connector as the Nissan. Has a male and female side which I was hoping to utilize the solid wire. Unfortunately, the female pins are different on the aftermarket harness over the OEM 40 pin. But a little bit of splicing and soldering, got the job done.
7) wiring diagrams between both 14-17 and an 18/19. Because I work in the industry, that was not a problem. I am happy to post them if you would like. The only thing that threw me off was that the 14-17 had CAN and M CAN running to the headunit and the 18 has M and V CAN running to it. The M CAN is the important one because of the terminating resistors. After connecting CAN to V CAN illumination and and another function regained normal operation. The 14-17 has a speed sensor wire which is no longer applicable on the newer units. And the 18/19 also has a wire that is not applicable on the older models. But with much tinkering, the system works.
8) USB port for apple car play, currently I am still figuring this out. The phone is plugged in, connects and drops instantly. After 10 attempts... it fails and also does not charge the phone either. The port I have is obviously from an early model. The company called Molex designs our USB ports and there seems to be something extremely fancy about the 18 and up USB ports. What I have found In the wiring diagrams is that the configuration of wiring is setup differently and I’m guessing the port rearranges it in some way to make car play work. The newer ones have a red illumination ring where the early ones don’t. Still in progress. The ports are 260$ CDN which is crazy. I have ordered one off eBay that I managed to scoop up for about 80$ CDN. Awaiting its arrival.
9) 17 and up gauge cluster. The steering controls go from steering wheel, translated by the cluster and sent to the radio. The reason I learned this is because I fitted a 17 steering wheel with heater in mine and the radio steering controls were completely out to lunch. I managed to track down a cluster with higher mileage than mine and drove mine until the mileage was a near match. Then swapped clusters.
9) 17 and up D shaped steering wheel. Why? The steering controls go through the cluster to the radio and as mentioned above, 14-16 do not compute with 17 and up.

So, in conclusion, it does work, lots of modification and tinkering is required, but it is a fully functioning system.

WHOA!!!! HOLY MOLY!
Amazing info! Thanks for your very detailed write up!

I sort of imagined it would be how you explained, but you provided good info I didn't think about especially with the USB port and Steering wheel finctions! Duh!

Great experiment my friend and hope to see some future photos or video of your project!

Good luck and thanks a million! :woot:

Hey everyone! I’m a new owner of a 2017 Nissan Rogue SL premium. So I wanted the Apple Car Play feature which my model does not come with. Does anyone know if the systems are interchangeable? Can I switch out my navigation unit with the 2018-2019 Nissan Apple Car Play unit? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

@aljwaadyyaser, what year is your car? what did you do to make Car play work? can you please elaborate?

These are the pics for the 14-17 (where I got the diagrams from, the older one was not as nicely plotted as the newer ones)

Please note: I am not sure about my original post in regards to the steering wheel. I put a heated wheel from a 17 in and that made the steering controls go out to lunch on the my 16, which is why the cluster was also done. I did that before the radio swap though.
