Im thinking about having my Ross forgies sent to swain for the Goldcoat on the dish and the molypoly on the skirt. Im just not sure if its worth the $160+ shipping. Any body done this or have any info on it ?

Peace

Yup anything to help combat detonation! Don’t forget about the exhaust valves.

Hell do all the valves!

Really ? ok, the valves too ? gonna push my project back some but if it will help to hold my engine together im all for it.

I've got my turbine Swain coated (white lightning or something) and it definitely stays cooler than the downpipe....it's pretty good stuff I think.

I plan on getting the pistons coated as well when I rebuild.

I was just thinking about the same thing after I read a lil tech thing about them in SportCompactCar(ads looked good).

They're supposed to be the best out there. Seems like when the pros coat something, they go with swain.

Yeah...but they have unlimited budgets...I dunno if I can justify spending even MORE money on this damn car when people have been getting by on good old forged pistons uncoated for years. My car will probably NEVER see a road coarse, autocross, or prolonged highway race even...hmmm, decisions.

I guess you must compensate for the coating thickness by boringthe engine out more? Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks!

Why? I'd just let the coating take up some of the clearance, it's a lubricating coating anyway. I would think it would help prevent cylinder wall scuffing which would allow you to run tighter clearances.

the coatings are so thin, you won't need to be concerned with clearances.

Another thing to coat would be all the bearings, rod, crank...blah. I've heard of guys having an engine running for 15 minutes with no oil before they realized it. Tearing apart the motor and the bearings are in perfect shape. Worth every cent in my eyes. Getting the compressor coated works well also, especially if you have it ported already.

Glad to see you around Demetrius...

The reason I was asking Nathan ( By the way thats my REAL name too) was that the enigne is the process of being rebuilt and bored .20 over. For me it cost the same for .30 or .20.Thanks for the answers guys.

Well hot darn, my engine is in the process of being bored .020 over also. What a coincidence! Haha, it's not all that usual to find other Nathan's, welcome to NICO!

Edit: according to Swain Tech the poly moly coating is .0007 thick. That's 7 ten thousandths, thats tiny! Generally when you are deciding how much piston to wall clearance to run it is to the thousandth. For instance, if you wanted to run 4 thousandths clearance and your piston was 3.500 inches in diameter you have the block bored and honed to 3.504 inches. Well with the poly moly coating on your pistons you would lower the clearance by .0007 inches all around, making your piston 3.5014 inches in diameter, which isn't very much considering it's a lubricating coating that according to Swain Tech is a "slippery coating works in conjunction with oil to provide an extremely low coefficent of friction, reduce piston scuffing and extend cylinder bore life."
