1999 QX4

150,000 miles

My Q has a very choppy suspension? I have changed the front and back shocks with dealer parts but that didnt help much.

Can anyone tell me what else I can do to get a smooth ride?

Thanks,abchubs

Other than new Michelin tires and replacing all the multidozens of rubber bushings in the suspension plus newmotor and transmission and differential mounts.

By 60,000 miles most of these quasi trucks loose their isolation and begin to ride/drive like what they are TRUCKS.

Start with the tires and triage your way up thru the next few thousand $$$. Make sure you have the wheels/ NEW tires checked for radial force imbalance by now I'm sure the wheeels need attention [replacement], at least matching optimization.

Making a 150k anything ride like new means lots of new parts!

check your suspension arms attached to the axle housing. I have come across quite a few pathfinders and qx4's with torn mount bushings in those arms. you can purchase those bushings seperately but I dont recommend it due to every one we have tried to just replace those bushings alone on was unsuccessful. they are pressed in and do not want to come out. we were successful on 1 set of 5 we tried. the last set we did we attempted to have a machine shop do the press work for us. they did some serious damage to the arms doing it. so in the end we put all new arm on it. The reason we continued trying to do it that way so many times is because it is much cheaper for the bushings then the whole arm so we were trying to save the customer some cash doing it that way. The last set is the last one we will ever try to do. From then on we only recommended the entire arms. I have done the repair for that problem my self approx 20 times. other techs in my shop have also performed that repair several times.

Have all 8 of those bushings inspected closely for cracking, tearing,or shifting on thier pin. you will mostlikely find this is you problem. I would geuss you also get the feeling the car is shifting to one side when accelerating?

Why I said suspension REPLACEMENT. It is physically impossible for rubber isolation bushings to last beyond 100,000 miles most are shot by 60,000 miles in that they will not measure the same as new durometer hardness.

Owners WANT TO BELIEVE this is not true but every car has the same problems. Even the LS400 with its soft mushy suspension eats bushings.
