Finally decided to stop being lazy and post some pics...

Last year was BONKERS. Worked 7 days a week from June till October, and had my mechanic friend finish the car. We also were featured in car craft for our participation in LSFest.


Drove the car most of the summer, was everything I thought it would be....Just instant boost.


But......now we're on to phase II....

installing flares sucks by the way. almost as bad as cleaning the rubberized undercoat out of the engine bay.

Yeah I probably would have gone without the flares and just did as much of a fender roll as possible. Oh well!

It might have been possible on the back...there was enough meat on the fender that I could have pulled and made it look good, but no bueno in the front. The s12s are real funny in the front rear offsets.

In the rear, I'm running a 16x8 +12 with a 25mm spacer, putting me at -13, and I still have ~ 1 inch to make up with the overfenders. The fronts are perfectly flush with the new flares. on the same size wheel and tire combo.

I can also run beefy rubber which is my personal preference. HATE stretched tires.

When I upgrade to big boy wheels next year I'll be able to run a 12 inch or more tire in the back. final size will be dictated by the axel swap.

Yeah. TBH, the 245s are pretty freakin wide right now.

I've never measureed flange to flange on the s12, but anecdotal posts over on club-s12 seem to say that I can take a ford ranger 8.8 rear end (which is offset to the right 2") lop of 2" from the long axel and it should be a near direct replacemnt once the new brackets are welded on...

With the extra meat I'm thinking I can use the stronger/wider rear end from a late model mustang or explorer and get the benefit of larger rear discs, and a clutch type lsd.

Either way there is at least a year before I can look at running that...and a lot of cash. The rear end swap would need to be done with a z32 tranny upgrade...once you add the clutch and adjustable 4 link arms and brakes and etc its another $4-5K....then Im stuck with 4 lug wheels that dont fit, so another $4K for big boy wheels.

waiting on a few brake fittings because the chasebays kit is a piece of junk.

Once brakes are done its off to the tuner, and a day or 2 of work in my garage to get the flares/OEM skirts back on.

I signed up for Carlisle, still planning on going.

Funny you should ask...were almost at a stand still.

We have a few mechanical thinkgs left to do, like bleed the brakes, adjust the coilovers, and other silly things, but we cannot get the damn thing to start on the EMS.

- Installed the 24-1 cam wheel
- perfomed timing sync...several times
- calibrated the sensors - the coolant temp is all wonky but weve traced it back to a bad ground in the harness that we need to re-do...but anyway should not stop us from starting.
- input the batter offset for the drilled injectors and used the resiz wizard to rescale the fuel maps

Then we get to the Coils...

The only other guy running these Audi coils is a KA-t.org member in sweden. Ive got a convo going with him, but he is not using EMS, so I might be at the limit if what I can learn from him.

Were basically copying the set up for maxima coils/the set up for running an SR off ems
- coil phasing offset from injector offset by 180 degrees (coils - 12,6,18,0 vs injectors - 0,18,6,12)
- trigger set to the default rising edge 9adjusted the dwell tables as well for the specific AUdi coil were using)
- all injectors and coils attached to a knock/O2 signal, and turned on for cranking.

During cranking we get both STAT and STAT SYNC after 1-2 revolutions like we should.
We have phyisically confirmed that all of the coils are firing by pulling them and actually seeing the spark.
We have also verified that the injectors are all spraying, both from the AEM read out, and by pulling the spark plugs and verifying that gas is on the plugs.

Were going to try the whole process again....starting over with the clean KA24DE Map based Cal and see if somewhere along the way we f*** up.

AND that's why I stick with ROM tunes...lol.

Its not that bad...I mean its not like were trying to launch the space shuttle into orbit.

Its an intentionally obtuse interface, thats why tuners cahrge what they do.

If you have to use the word obtuse as a descriptor then I want no part of it. But that's just me. I'm not a huge fan of complicated.

Making progress....got cyl #2 to cough.

I use obtuse because the front end software could be sooooooooooooooooo much simpler and user friendly, but it isnt. my gut tells me that is intentional so that only, "certain," people can use it.

Get back to basics. Pull the fuel pump fuse before you start cranking to see if you're giving it too much fuel. If the b**** starts and runs for a second, then dies, you know that is your problem.

Its all in the ECU. car was running fine on the previous ROM tune, base pressure is still right per the gauge at the regulator.

Pulling the fuse sort of sweeps the spectrum as you crank and lose pressure. Again, if it starts, you know you're giving it too much fuel (in the tune).
Its just a way to check, not the end all solution.

The KA-t.org guys and the AEM Tech came through.

Started it up yesterday with the modified base tune they provided. Tuner is coming on Thursday hopefully, his schedule is always a crapshoot. I just need to figure out what to do with the front arches...

s12 front weels are naturally off center by 1-2 inches forward - its just how they came from the factory, but now with meaty tires, hybrid s13 front suspension, and squating on coils the edges of the tread touch the arch when cornering.

Not sure if more caster will help. might need to get creative.

Finally almost done.

Did some street tuning for cruise/low boost yesterday with the local EMS guru. Car is already way to f*** fast. At only 8psi, it easily overtakes my friend's s14 with a 400 whp VH swap...car is just a blast.

cannot wait to hit the dyno on Thursday and really push the thing. We have not even turned the meth on, or used the boost controller. At 20+psi I cant even think what this thing is going to be like.

I'm going to go as far as saying the GTX2876 is the perfect turbo....tilll this gets boring.

Yeah man. I try to tell people not to knock the t28 series Turbos. I have one on my miata (2860rs) and it's pretty money.

And don't feel like you need to up he boost and add meth. It just adds complexity and unreliability. If the thing hauls as is, leave it.

I gotta at least push it it a little....meth is only if we start to see knock above 17psi. Tuner is going to make sure that should the meth fail, the motor won't grenade, its just going to be for a little cushion at the top end. Plus the meth controller and the aem have a failsafe output to pull timing and add fuel should something go wrong....looking for like 8/10ths...

Honestly alsovlooking at a built head. Right now it's stock. Motor practically bounces off the 7k rev limiter. If my machinist and I can keep the valves from floating, and help it breath a little better with some light port work it looks like it will pull all the way to 7500-8k.

The dyno sheet will tell all.

The 2876 is a badmofo. My only issue was the expense of it. Have you weighed the car after the mods? The power/weight ratio is going to be ridiculous. So f*** can't wait for a ride-along at Carlisle!

I was thinking of taking it to the scrap yard...they give you a print out with the weight.

stock curb weight was 2580 lbs...I took out a ton of stuff when I removedx the CA20E, but with all the turbo piping, Im prolly right back at the same weight...

So...

if I make a conservative 360hp to the wheels, and 424.8 at the crank, that gives me a rough Brake HP /Tonne of ~363....which is a hair over say an Audi R8 V10 at 346.

Anyway you slice it, that is fast.
