Post

Hello... I'm new here... I recently purchased a 1994 300 zx convertible na automatic... I got it for 1500 cash.. Car had a few issues.. Needs body work.. 2 of the convertible frame arms were busted. Had a few misfires. It would get hot.

I fixed the misfires. Needed 1 coil. 1 spark plug. And an injector (yes I pulled the plenum. The hoses are a b****. I did do the coolant hose bypass. :)

I pulled the broken pieces off the convertible frame and had them welded. Convertible now operates smoothly :)

I found that the coolant reservoir was cracked and was leaking.. I bought a used one on eBay and installed it... Now it doesn't get hot anymore

The reason why I'm posting today is to ask the experts about a problem I think I am having.

The acceleration seems sluggish. From a stop it doesn't seem to have the power I would expect from a v6. At high RPM the engine is strong but from a stop seems rather sluggish.
Are there any common problems like maybe a throttle position sensor or MAP sensor? Any help would be very !much appreciated.

These cars are MAF, not MAP. But usually the MAF will be a run-or-not type thing. Usually hesitation is the wrong spark plugs though. The correct part number us NGK PFR6B-11. Gap should be .044". That would be my first place I'd look.

Thank you for the feedback... I probably should throw in a new set of plugs. The car does seem to have an intermittent slight misfire at idle

The MAF sensor can be cleaned with MAF cleaner purchased at most auto stores, and isn't a bad idea if the airbox is dirty and maybe the filters went a little long a few times...

Also, the misfire is most likely corrosion at several possible points, most likely the injector connectors and then maybe PTU harness and then maybe idle air control valve and/or the coolant temp sensors on the engine coolant hardpipe...all good areas to inspect and clean off that green grunt. These things along if present will cause issues and when fixed will make the car run as best possible.

Quick update...
I cleaned the MAF... Slight improvement.
Then I pulled the codes(duh) code 34
Inspected the harness... The knock sensor was plugged into the wrong harness.. I think it was the cam actuator

I plugged the knock sensor into the right harness and God bless it.... The car has its balls back... Freaking awesome! Thanks for the help.

Haha, yep, the VTC solenoids and the knock sensor can be plugged into each other. Gotta love engineers, right?
