my strut boots on the my Q45a are split and not capable of protecting the strut pistons. How important is it to replace these?

How long do you want your struts to last?

Yeah, but trying to change the boots without removing the shocks is pretty much impossible, anyway! If the shocks are new, I might consider taking them off and replacing the dust boots, but it would be far simpler to just wait till the shocks need changing out and put on new dust boots at that time.

Of course I would like them to last a long time and mine has the active suspension. It looks like a real pain of a job to replace these and wonder what others have done

A good point. My guess is that they have not been worked on on this car yet. So, if the dust boots are bad, then the struts probably need some work too. Just do them both might be the way to go.

Active suspension is much more expensive to "replace" or "recharge", etc.. There are people here who have done recharges - e-mail "texasoil" for more info. He is probably the resident expert on doing this work.

Others have done a conversion ... replacing the active system with a stock one. The owners here who like the road-feel and handling of a properly functioning A model are horrified at the thought of a conversion, btw! :)
