I use a 7" variable speed sander/polisher that I got from Harbor Freight. They are around $35 (less with a coupon). They use velcro backed sandpaper available in different grits. The paint comes off rapidly and no chemicals to mess with. It will take off paint to the bare metal very quickly. Other options include Aircraft Remover spray or liquid (expensive) and paint remover (expensive and messy) and soda blasting (equipment rental).

With the 7" sander pictured, you could strip a 720 in about half a day. You could strip the hood in 20 minutes. Good luck.

Becareful with media blasting, be safe about it. Don't just use play sand in your garage or something and a cloth respirator. Thats stupid.

Sanding is a good option but still be safe and wear a respirator or do it outside and still cover your face. I used a wire wheel on the rusty spots and sanded paint off of the small parts I repainted. I haven't done a whole car or truck yet. Hopefully this year I will do the truck.

I do not recommend sand blasting because of the risk to your lungs. It might be OK for small things, like steel wheels, or cabinet blasting small things, but sandblasting a whole car or truck is both a health hazard and will leave sand in places that you will never be able to get it out of.

Watch some YouTube videos about soda blasting. That's right, baking soda! It's a differnt grade than what you have in the kitchen, but it's the same stuff and it is not toxic! It will not harm glass or chrome. The residue should be carefully rinsed off with a weak vinegar solution (because baking soda is a base). Then you can use etching primer or whatever to prime the metal.

For the record, I've never sand blasted or soda blasted anything, but I have talked to several people who have (I was restoring my 66 FORD Galaxie). So I really am not speaking from experience. But, I believe what I have written is correct because I could not find an autobody shop in my city who offered sandblasting - said it was too dangerous and messy. There were several people who offered soda blasting.

On another issue - Rust Removal - small parts can be soaked in Evapo-Rust (a non-toxic chemical which can be reused) or you can use an electrolytic process using a battery charger. Both will remove rust at the molecular level.

Back to the issue of paint removal down to the bare steel. You can find good info about how to use the 7" sander at this link.

I wouldn't leave it just primered for long, From reading I understand the following.

It is a bad Idea to just spray primer a car and leave it for a while because the primer is porous and moisture can absorb and start rusting under the primer.

I'd choose the color now and keep prepping for paint.

I agree with Breadbox, rattlecan primer will allow moisture to get to the metal. Read more about body prep for painting at the link I gave in the earlier post. That site has a lot of good info for free. If you can't keep it away from moisture after you put on primer, then just treat the bad rust spots now and leave the rest alone for now. Get the necessary funds together for body prep, primer and paint and then you'll get it done right!

How about throwin' up some pix? Let's see what you got!

That truck looks like it's in great shape. :dblthumb: My '86 has some rust in similar spots along the rear cab window. Anyway, keep us posted with your progress. I agree, you can be more creative than just another primer black truck like the other 3 down the street. Patience, my friend, patience!
