I found a dangling vacuum hose near the electronic portion of the EGR vacuum control assembly. There is a small module that contols the vacuum to a flat disc which eventualy leads to the EGR. Under this module there is a small metal tube that comes from under the plenum. Connected to this tube is a rubber hose about four inches long. It really isn't long enough to connect to any thing close by. It looks like there is a broken vacuum tee in it. Apparently this line runs to a nother location. Any ideas?

I've tried to post pics on here before, but have been unsuccessful linking them to my post. If someone would like to give me a step-by-step, I will attach a picture of the dangling vacuum line.

Thanks,

Boudreaux

Check out this thread. When I bought my Q the EGR system had been bypassed and it took me a while to figure it out. Does it look anything like the pic? CEL coming on after about 15-20 minutes of driving?

Yes, the hose is in the same area as the first pic in the thread. My Q has a electronic EGR vacume control (about 2"X1"x1") unit mounted in the same area and this hose travels under it. I don't think it hooks to it or the EGR.

Is this the one? The I.D. of the tubing looks pretty small. Is something broken off in there?

Thanks for posting the pic. How did you do it? I pasted the link between the image brackets.

Yes, there is something broken off. It looks like a vac tee or connector. I think it may have been connected to another line that leads who knows where. The pic makes it look like its connected to that little electric erg vac control. It actually connects to a metal tube that leads down under the plenum.

At Q45.org where the pic is hosted, bring up the full size image, right click, properties, and then highlight and copy the file name. Come back to your post and paste between the [IMG] [IMG].

Sorry I couldn't give you much of a detailed explanation today. I try to keep my internet surfing to a minimum at work. There's no easy or straighforward answer to your problem. You're going to need to print up a few pages from the FSM and start tracing hoses.

I had the "hose to nowhere" syndrome and did a lot of guessing as to what it could be for many months. After months of skilled guesswork I ended up loosening the plenum and tracing every hose in the emissions system. Turned out the PO had bypassed the EGR system but you couldn't see it until the plenum was lifted.

Your case may or may not be the same but to find the problem you're going to have to check every vac (emissions) hose in the system. The throttle body will need to come off to check the 2 emissions hoses attached to the backside and the plenum will need to be lifted to get a good look at the hose cluster attached to its underside.

The first few pages of the EF&EC section of the FSM have some excellent drawings and schematics showing the location of the components and hoses. Start reading, tracing lines, and troubleshooting. You're going to end up pulling each hose, blowing air into it, and checking where the air should be coming out. It's a PITA but when you figure it out you'll be surprised at how simple the fix was.

Good luck.

On my 1990 I have a line which is connected to the back of the EGRC solenoid then does a 180 degree turn underneath the solenoid and connects to a steel line.

goody94Q45-

Thanks for the help. It is amazing how many variations there are on the vacuum hose routing. I looked at the thread you suggested and it looks like the EGRC Solenoid is above the CAS, where mine is by the EGR Valve. Anyway, mxr662 posted a pic that looked similar to my situation. I used an inspection mirror to look at the backside of the EGRC and there was the broken connection. The vac hose is the loop back 180º and connect. I had to remove the EGRC and reattach the nipple. All is good now.

Mxr662: Thanks for the pic. You were right on.

Simple fix. Good news.

The 2 solenoids for the 94-96 are in the front of the engine. On the 90-93 one of them (or both?) are on the DS of the engine.

I think I superglued one of those nipples back on to that same solenoid once. Might try to pick one up in a junk yard or from someone parting a car out here... mine failed in a month or two. I think the heat there is just too much for it...

Good luck!

Q451990

I tacked it in place with super glue and reinforced with JB weld. I was concerned about the heat myself.

They [plastic] like rubber components need to be replaced brand new.

Actually I meant the one that I superglued. I replaced it with a new one... I was just suggesting that a cheap replacement from a salvage yard might be an option since these solenoids never seem to fail except from abuse - like from someone being ham-handed taking a hose off.
