I have a vaccuum leak-like sound which occurs only when cranking and following shut down. The sound seems to come from the rear of the engine. There is no such sound when the engine is running.

Is there some vaccuum solinoid which activates during the crank phase and upon shut down which might lead me to the source?

As usual, your input is always most helpful. I replaced my alternator this weekend without much difficulty (oem from Scottsdale). The super glue on the rear through bolt "nut" trick worked like a charm. Thanks all!

Your fuel pump may be on it's way out. Is it just a sucking noise you hear or more of a cranking noise?

I've heard this before too... It wouldn't be the fuel pump if it's coming from under the hood. My guess is that it's the AAC valve operating, but I'd sure check the vacuum hoses, etc. Noises are hard to diagnose online :D

I thought the sucking sound was supposed to be jobs going to Mexico because of NAFTA according to Ross Perrot. They went to China.

Could be a leak in the power brake booster hoses, they get pretty hot and dried and are rarely replaced.

A good test for a vacuum leak is to spray brake parts or carb cleaner around the suspect area while the car is idling. If the engine speed goes up (introducing more fuel into the system) - you've found your leak.
