Stock MAF

I have a pretty basic question:If i install a somewhat custom cold air intake can i still use the stock maf?the reason i ask is because when my friend and i put a intake on his ranger it ran like s***.everything will be the same up to the MAF then im going to cut a pipe that goes down threw that plastic deflector and T's off into 2 cone filters.

The engine computer bases the airflow signal from the air passing through the MAF so modifying the piping in front of it shouldn't make any difference unless whatever you do severely restricts it or adds turbulence.
