I have the infamous ticking noise from the front of my engine - but I have no FSM. I do however have the 90FSM that I dl'ed from somewhere on this site. First I would like to remover the timing chain guide since I've read that they are not needed to see if this corrects the timing chain problem.

When I pop off the valve cover - are they easily accessible?

If the problem is the chain and needs to be replaced - will the SOHC version of the FSM be able to guide me effectively thru the process? If not can someone post a step by step (if not too long) on replacing the timing chain?

Where is the best place to get the timing chaing kit (chain, tensioners, etc) I read from another post that NAPA has the complete for like 120 - wonder if that was the SOHC version though.

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Hopefully you are fairly proficient. Here is what basically needs to be done: Remove anything that is blocking the front cover from coming off. Remove the valve cover and upper front cover. Drop the oil pan(from what I understand it is the hard part becuase there isn't much room). Remove the front lower cover. Replace guides and chains. Reassemble. If you just want to remove the guides on the upper chain: Remove the valve cover and remove the upper front cover. Then just unbolt the 2 guides(NOT the tensioner). This usually will get rid of most of the sound and most people recommend you remove them anyway. Be forewarned, replacing both chains is pretty labor intensive.

Hey yellow jacket, thanks - that is pretty informative. I can do the work -- I just need detailed instructions somewhat like Service Manuals give -- would you be able to do that? For example, first . . ., next . . ., you know . . .

To be honest with ya I could only do it if I was looking at the car. I don't usually use service manuals anymore because I don't need to. The only exceptions are usually torque specs, some wiring diagrams, and some voltages. You could probably go to your local mechanic and ask him to print off the complete procedure from Mitchell On Demand. It is an extremely good program and is usually very detailed and will contain all of the related info(torques and sequences etc.) Sorry I can't offer you more.
