Any '98 I30 owners here tackled this? Local Infiniti dealerships are closed today so I can't call to see if I can get a rebuild kit, but does anyone know if they sell them? I've recently had starter problems to the point where whacking it with a hammer won't do the trick much longer. If I take it out and give everything a good cleaning, will that buy me some time until I can track down a rebuild kit?

Well, I managed to pull the starter (which turned out not to be too difficult at all), however once I got it out I realized I don't have the right sized wrench to take the two bolts off of the back housing. Dammit. I cleaned it up a bit and bolted it back on, now she's at least starting up a bit faster for now. Bought me some time at least.

If I can get a hold of the right wrench and a rebuild kit, I'm thinking of doing a step by step picture guide. I figured it's the least I could do, you guys have helped me out so much on here it'd be nice to contribute for a change :D

There is no rebuild kit needed. All you have to do is dis-assemble it and clean the front/mechanical side thoroughly and then apply white lithium grease. The back/electrical side needs to be cleaned thoroughly with contact cleaner. I have done this on both I30s we have and both starters are doing great.

That's great to hear! Is there anything specifically that shouldn't be greased in the front, or is it all fair game?
