i scheduled to take my '08 coupe to the dealership for the 1-year maintenance checkup, even though i'm only at about 12k miles. i've taken it in twice so far, once for the 3-month and once for the 6-month. each time i was charged a reasonable amount (last time was around $100 only because i got an oil change and switched to full synthetic, first time was much less than that), so i certainly expected to have to pay something. But when dude told me it would be $270 plus tax, i almost choked

does this sound like a reasonable amount for a 1-year/15k mile checkup on a car that's obviously still under warranty? i've got a week before my appointment, so i have some time to get some feedback and try to make a valid argument with them

Wait, are you telling me you paid $100 for an oil change?

no sir, the oil change itself was maybe $50 of the $100 total. it may have even been a little less than $100 total. it was back in march and i don't have my invoice right in front of me

Id say that's a major ripoff. Most of what they will do is just grease stuff and make sure the belts and hoses are okay, which if your car was fairly taken care of they will be. Check out the maintenance schedule that came with the owners manual. I think the important one is like 30k when you are told to change the transmission fluid and replace some filters. Anything before that major one is unnecessary in my mind.

that's exactly how i feel. i'll have to have a talk with the service department manager when i take it in. i've dealt with him a few times due to issues i've had with the car, and he's been pretty awesome to deal with so far

For my 15k service it was around the same price. It included oil change, tire balance and rotation, all major fluids check, and not sure beyond that. Dealers always cost more but i would rather have a dealer then a pepboys or sears where they are clueless. 270 a year for the check-up is not bad at all. (My oil change is 25 bucks for conventional at valvoline or 40 bucks with a detail car wash at the hospitality wash down the street)

I do everything myself. And for anything that I dont have the capability to do (tire rotation/balance for example) I have friends with access to them and pay nothing for it. I refuse to take it to the dealership besides anything that is recalled, like my rear brakes.

I'm sorry but 270 to have your oil changed, tire balanced and rotation and fluid check is a major ripoff. If that included an alignment then maybe is worth it.

At 12k you should only be changing your oil really.

Honestly, just go to your local auto store, buy the oil and filter and do it yourself for $45. Everything else is a ripoff.

Hell, for your 15k, buy your own air filters, rotate your own tires (if you have 2 jacks...) and do all that stuff by yourself. The dealer doesn't really need to do anything.

I get discount coupons all the time from my dealer for service or oil changes. With one of those, an oil change is usually less than $30. My mileage is ridiculously low (9K), but I've had like 4 oil changes and never paid more. Plus on the second or third, I asked to have my wheel locks replaced with regular lug nuts, and they did it for FREE!
