ok so a group of friends were cruising last niight out to this drift spot we session at out here in Cali. about 9 cars to be exact buyt mostly 240's corollas and a mitsubishi starion. my friend behing my in his mr2 was filming just for hte hell of it when me and a friend ran( my 240 and his starion) when i shifted into 3rd i got this really hard fuel cut type action and my car backfired like a gunshot, it was like pitch datk that night and verry foggy. i saw this brigh *** light behind me and my friend immediately called me afterewards." MAN WTF you just shot like a 4 or 5 foot flame out"

Im running ssautochrome manifold, 02 dump, downpipe, rsr 3inch exhaust and ssautochrome intercooler w/blitz SUS metal wire filter and greddy type s unrecirculated BOV on stock turbo and 91 octane.

he then told me hes keep recording and for me to just get on it for a while. so i proceeded to downshift and upshift. we soon stopped to watch the video footage he took and i shot about 12 flamed about 2 feet long , from the exhasut up to the tail light.

reason for posting is a question i have on regulating this richness in which im running? is my only source to use safc to lean it out becasue there is major excess fuel being dumped.

its because your bov is vented to atmosphere. When you take your foot off and the bov vents, a lot of air gets let out of the intake. This air has been measured by the afm,so the computer goes OMG! OMG!, lots of air, fark, i better pump in a sh1t load of fuel or else it will leanout.

When decelerating, this fuel is not often burnt, so it goes into the red hot exhaust manifold where it burns and makes the big flame you see.

Route it back into the intake stream.

its not so much the ECU as it is just the factory air metering setup. most factory cars do similar things when vented to the atmosphere.

I now have a recirculated BOV vs nothing at all, and I can get power after shifting gears much faster now, I loose almost no boost vs nearly all of it before.. but I can still backfire 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 if I am way up high and then clutch and get off the gas completely at the same time..

As has been stated, it is due to the MAFS setup and running the BOV to the atmosphere. Not much of a remedy unless you find a way to recirc it. Sorry!

come on float you could atleast mention the blow through system where the MAF is mounted after the blow off valve usually on the cold pipe about 12" before the Throttle Body.

i run a map sensor and open bov and still get big flames occasionally.. could be leaky injectors, maybe water temp sensor fault = over fueling, o2 sensors?, open bov in ya'll cases of course, running rich basically and fuel getting torched comming out a hot exhaust

loudest pop/bang i ever heard was tunning the car one night, switching on the haltech/ignition on and off repeatedly while we checkd sensors etc, the injectors were opeing and flooding the cylinders and it obviously went into teh exhaust and hot turbo etc and finally the spark plugs fired when we turned it on one last time and PLLLLOOOOWWW!!!!!!... scared the **** out of me and the dyno guy

Could also be ignition problems.

Coils, plugs, etc.

The problem that I have with the blow through setup is that you basically HAVE to run a catch can. If you don't, you'll get oil all over the MAFS and screw it up. It's not that big of a deal, but to hook one up correctly on a boosted car can be a bit of a pain. It's not nearly as straightforward as it is on a NA car. PLUS, I don't know how he feels about chopping up his cold pipe, PLUS, I don't know where his BOV is located. Outside of that, yea, I should have mentioned that!

also dont run mild steel intercooler pipes in a blow through setup!

i have a turbo focus at the shop now, the maf went out we pulled it out and it was as rusty as a pipe left out in the rain for months. its goin to cost him alot of money to fix it and retune

since youhave an SAFC, just use the DECEL Air setting and you can still run atmospheric..I posted a writeup in another thread on here how to set it..just search DECEL and my username and you will find it
