My speedometer has been frakin out on me lately...

Once in a while the needle would stay at zero and not move at all and if I drive around for a while it come back to life...

Do I have to replace the speed sensor on the transmission?

mine does the samething. If you floor it, whne you hit third gear at or around 3500-4000 RPMS, does your car stop accelrating or even if your in fifth gear does it do that? If so then i know exactly what your talking about. Check your transmission. I changed my speed sensor and still the speedometer goes ape poop so yeah check out your transmission and the sensors inside of it.

P.S: you should put this inside of the tech threads, you may get better and more educated (no offense to anyone) results.

There is no way to tell you for sure without actually going through your electrical system. If you had an auto I could tell you right now what it probably is. Since your car is a 96 the ecu should trip a code if the speed sensor goes bad so you may want to pull the codes.

Then it is probably the cluster or the wiring. You'll need to check it to be sure though.

My check engine light came on and the code was 14 which is the speed sensor so Im guess there is something wrong with the speed sensor... not the wiring. Correct me if im wrong

When I first got my s13 the speedo wasn't working and the throttle would cut out at around 5k rpms in 3rd gear. I just replaced the gauge cluster and that fixed both problems. I do have a 5 spd tho...
