I have a Q45 and the power steering kicks off at about 5 miles per hour. The speedometer is not working either. When i am driving sometimes the speedometer starts working and the power steering kicks on as well. I was told there is a speed sensor associated that is going out that controls the speedometer and power steering. A local shop said the unit was cheap the but replacement was involved and would cost over $600. Anyone ever have this issue. How easy is it to replace this?

As always, thanks for the input.

It's detailed in the previous posts.

Shouldn't require too much labor. Check the FSM

I forgot to mention that in my frustration I slapped the top of the dashboard a couple of time and everything started working. It later quit and i repeated the same thing and it kicked on again.

Speed sensor on transmission output [drive shaft speed] sends signal to an IC on dash pc board which creates a 0>5 volt signal that is isolated 5 ways and sent to speedovoltmeter, PS pressure controller, cruise, TCU, ecu.Tachometer-voltmeter is a 0>5 volts sole created by ecu from CAS rpm signal.

AH man i love how you describe the situation in such a nice scientific way. If i was you i would include a "In your face Bitc*" at the end of my reply's, im sure it will make it that much more enjoyable. Haha.

conansq45t seriously being 44 and not being able to spell your cars name brings some questions to my 20 year old mind. Reading will become an addiction here so learn how to search and enjoy your hours pass by like minutes when you get deep on reading here.

Thanks (most of you) for your input. The link was helpful but I still find myself searching for the location and extraction of the in dash unit. I will Search through previous posts for information.

Also I think this might be a stretch but If you have a junk yard near by and they happen to have a Q45 or Nealy the same year (90-94) I think will work together, I would check the TCU AKA Transmission Control unit.

Watch this thread to confirm or not: zer...3-q45

Because like my topic says, I got a 1991 Q45 ECU but when I installed it I got "TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION" on the Diagnostic screen.

Also How does the Q45 Shift does it shift normally or... I know there are a lot of thing that affect shift timing and feel but this might be a clue.

Luckly the ECU works as far as I know.

it could be your instrument cluster too (speedo gauge). the speed sensor from the transmission goes directly to the speedo gauge. the speedo gauge is where the speed signal is sent to all other components.

i replaced my speedo gauge twice (odometer wasn't working). also there is a difference between active/non-active speedo guages.
