I thought it was funny that you wanted to replace the fenders when each would cost the same as the whole car did! Well, I gotta give you lots of respect for jumping into such a project.
And the poly-urethane bushing kit will cost twice what the car did. There's no point nickel and diming the project when the car needs so much attention.

Lots of respect to you man, I dont know how many people would have the patience to see a project like that through. That car has terminal cancer and you're fighting to save it's life haha.

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress!

What size metal did you use for the frame rails?

Some more work done today.

Nicely undercoated rail after all that sanding and grinding.

Out comes Mr. Rear Subframe

Ha! This will catch the diff when it falls.

And it did. (I removed the auto transmission the same way)

Now let's check out the mess of rust where the subframe used to be.

Now let's look at the rear diff because it makes me happier than looking at more rust.

Some minor work done (was short on time today)

Closed up for the day. Will resume on Thursday

That rust really made me sad inside. The grinder can't reach some places, so that means lots of sand paper. God, I hate using sand paper. Oh well, I'll be doing more sanding, grinding, and welding come Thursday.

God I hate rust. I wish iron's oxide layer was more like zincs or titaniums. Fe2O3 oh how I loathe you!

lol nice nickname, many props to you. When they call your car a 240 it's in reference to how many hrs you spent to get rid of the rust.

I hope you REALLY REALLY grinded away all the rust before you painted over that junk. That and those holes in the frame.. EEE.. major welding. I'm so paranoid about that, i'd want to tig weld 1/4" plates on that mofo, BLEH!. Good luck man, it looks like you're going far pretty fast.

Man! I want it to see more pics of your car but more I see, the more I wonder what keeps you going....check those subframe studs, they look kind of flimsy...too much rust around them. Are the roads in Canada in the winter time this salty???

Nope. They are in there - nice and solid. I'm oging to be adding some more metal around there, but it's pretty sturdy for how it looks.

It's not a bad idea at all. Problem is, I don't have a sand blaster or the access to a compressor.

Yup. Tons of salt on the roads during winter - however, I bought the car in this condition. I have no idea how many winters it saw (clearly lots though).

I'll be out and working on the car tommorow, so I'll be sure to grab some more pictures then.

Man, I would've spent a few bucks on muriatic acid and gotten crazy with it... much easier than sanding for sure.

That muriatic acid will eat away that rust, but it'll just rust up again 30-45 minutes later if you don't use some of that anti-rust coating on it quick.Find a way to blast it with CO2. you know, co2 blasting. won't be any sand left around to clean up .

Passenger's side front rust repair.

Some sealant applied.

Oops! There's a hole!

Time to make a patch.

Look at that purdy weld.

Time to start welding.

Oh crap! What's that smoke all about?

Oh, there's the problem! Damn rags.

More welding.

Clean up time.

Making a good hard jack point for the rear.

Finishing up again.

Damn, it's been a dirty day.

All cleaned up for the day. Another 5hours in the books.

I had to do some "filling in welding" on the front rail and the rear jack point, so it looks a tad messy. Either way, a good day's work done.

Today's Update: Fire ahoy!

As planned, today is Thursday and work has to be done on the car. I made a plan for today:1) Remove brake pedal assembly2) Remove some rust from the rear of the car3) Weld in a patch to a hole in the sub-frame railSeemed simple enough.

Undercoating all dried and such.

Picked up some more supplies (undercoating, 6011 rods, 6013 rods, and 7014 rods)

The mighty welder.

Out comes the brake pedal. Wait a tic, what in hell does that switch do?

I tried trace the wires to figure out what they did. It connects to some wires that run further under the dash. I assume it's some sort of "amp on/amp off" since there used to be a stereo in the car.

More work getting the pedal out. God damn it was hard to fit in there.

I figured I might as well pull out the rotten remains of the emergency brake cable setup too.

Today's first experience with fire - while cutting up the new patch for the rear subframe, I may have set fire to my coveralls a little bit.

Welding in the 1/4 patch. In retrospect, I could of went thinner. However, I did not.

During this process, I encountered my second experience with fire. Apparently some sparks/flames escaped through that little gas access door and set fire to the rear seat sitting in the hatch.

Did some more clean up.

Packed up and headed home.

I only have a couple more exams left, so more work can continue with the mighty 230sx-t.
