First time posting and I thought I would remind everyone of something since I am awaiting 2014 to by an 89 R32 GTR

You will still have a very difficult time registering the car in California (I live here and work as a tech in the state referee program). It would have to go to a lab where you would pay an huge price to try and make it legal and there are still strict guidelines about getting it smogged. So if you are considering one in California consider moving or registering it with a friend or family member in another state

...or get the hell out of that clown state.

Yeah everything about this state pretty much sucks besides the weather and the girls.

As far as I'm concerned I will probably move to Oregon or Arizona or register the car with a really good friend in Las Vegas who I know won't screw me over. Not really keen on moving when I am getting paid to do smog checks...

AZ has smog ONLY in the 3 larger cities.

Also, if it's over 25 or a specialty vehicle, there's no need to worry about smog, as I have a good, legal way to bypass it. Most of my cars don't have to be emissions tested.

I've been thinking hard on trading my '10 lifted silverado (thats still under factory warranty) for a skyline r33 gtst with a swapped rb26 that is super mint, and that would be my daily driver, but knowing that my car could be seized any minute freaks me out. A 1985 HR30 with full Tomei RB26 swap......it took a long time to get all the parts for this thing even in Japan..........yeah yeah, I like 4 doors
better than 2!!!!! I saw DR's more than HR's.......I wanted something different!!!! Just wanted to say hey and show you my completely legal and registered Skyline.....

Thanks for the 4 door comment.........I drove the car to a local get together and 99% of the people loved it.......ha ha ha This one dude looked at it and said "It aint a real Skyline and it aint s*** unless it was a GT-R"........that was funny........I explained to him that Nissan didnt have GT-R's in these years and he started arguing that he knew they did.........it was funny. I couldnt help it........then the guy starts arguing that my Tomei RB wasnt a real engine and that I made it up! WOW! Has the American car enthusiast scene died this much? There are many many cars I dont like, but I wont walk up and talk s*** to someone.........I respect each car for what it is.......and if its not my car.....then oh well, its someone elses dream then.! All in all, I did not let anyone ruin my night. I was there to have a good time and meet new people, even the doubters ha ha ha!!!! I've actually got orders to Japan in Febuary, I'll be there for at least 2 years. So I've strongly been considering picking up a GTR while i'm over there. Only problem is getting it back, If I leave Japan in 2014, what are my options on importing. Right now it just looks like I need to find a flawlessly perfect 89 r32?

Any input or suggestions are appricated! Thanks :P

Over 25 years DOT, and 21 years old EPA is not a problem. In California you still need to smog anything newer than 1976. Its all just a matter of filling out the correct paperwork. HS7 and 3520-1. Pay the duties and fees, and its all good. Its not difficult, but you don't want to do it wrong, and you don't want to have everything you need before attempting it. It can be an expensive mistake. The shipping companies and ports don't play. Any mistake, yours or even theirs, and it costs you. Can be hundreds of dollars a day in port fees. Same thing with customs. Make their job easy, and it is easy. Make a few errors, and they will send you home.

First time poster here. Been following for a while so i already know that the R32 and 34 with most of the R33's being illegal to import. My question is, If there is a 97 R33 for sale in Canada, would it be legal to get one there or does it have to be imported from japan? I know you have to go through an RI and all. Basically, my wife and i would like to get our hands on an R33 four door in the future. I know the R32 is about to hit 25, but they don't grab me the way the R33 does (though, the R33 doesn't hold a candle to an R34 in my book). Might look into it after i re-enlist in the Guard.

Doesn't matter if it comes from Canada, Japan, Mexico or Bolivia - Bringing it into the US still carries the same set of problems.

I can't answer the first part of your question as far as what it'll cost in Japan, but judging fro your other questions, you clearly didn't read the article or the thread.

This is my "wants" and it might be lengthy, if you would like to help and pitch in I'd appreciate it, otherwise ignore.

So I'm hoping to import an R32 come 2014. I'm a bit picky and figure if I'm going to go through all that trouble to import it's got to be a perfect match. I want a GT-R, manual, closest to stock shape as possible, and either in white, gray or blue. Now say I purchased the car in Japan and it meets the 25 yr old requirement, approximately how much would it cost in $ to get it imported to the US? A breakdown of costs and where it goes would be nice.

I've done a good deal of research the past few years and even more so lately since it's getting close. I might have missed a few facts here or there but I'm pretty serious about getting one here in my garage all registered and legal.

Also I drive a 350Z right now but have always been a GT-R fanboy. I love my Z but I'm sure she won't mind if I bring a hot cougar friend in the garage.

Good luck with your search. Many of us are planning some similar and waiting for the magic day. As far as the manual goes, I had to download it in PDF form. Worked out well, but wound up in two different binders as it was 800+ pages.

Um, I think he meant "manual transmission".

Shipping alone (not including any registration / title transfer / etc) from JP to US is $4-5K. Plus, R32's aren't exactly cheap in Japan, and they're going to go even higher once 25 years hits. You're going to be competing with every shyster importer in America who wants to supply the F&F crowd with a ragged-out R32.

The more important question needs to be: Where am I going to find parts for one?

Yeah I meant manual transmission, I'd be itching for a manual transmission swap from day one if I got an auto.

$4-5k +/- 1k doesn't seem too bad. I looked at some online Japanese ads and BNR32s don't fetch THAT high of a premium. I'm wondering what the process is like to purchase one now and have it stored until it's ready for shipping.

In regards to finding parts, since every F&F kid will have an R32 it means there will be more R32s in the junkyard stateside... cheaper parts!

So it would be easier to import one through Canada? I've seen some for about $9-10K. I've also taken a look at the list of RI's and contemplated contacting them to find the going rate for import. IF i got an R30 or 31, would i have to pay for someone to bring it in, or could i go through the RI and still be able to drive up there, pick up the car (with all the paperwork) and drive it back myself? ( I figure it would be cheaper to go that route). I'd love to have a Skyline, preferably a 4 door with a manual tranny. The few Skyline's i've seen in the US were 2 doors. Parts i know would be an issue. Would it be possible to convert the speedo and odometer to US specs?

I'll tell you this since I just got over here and I am in Sasebo and I luckily got my hands on a stock GTR 1993 Nismo edition with all options, it will be hard to get an R32. The problem like everybody is saying that all the F&F fanboys will want to import them and then they will realize that it just costs too much. Also the Japanese do not have the same fascination with older cars and keeping them around. I walked around a junker that just had bodies of R32,R33, and R34 along with RX7 Supras and 300ZX and such just laying. Brought a tear to my eye. Also the Japanese tend to do the same thing as the old guys in the states when it comes to the older older skylines and just let them sit saying "I'll restore it one day..." instead of selling it. I am possibly looking into bringing my car over if I can find an 89 body...yes I know why would you do that and just not buy a 89 from the get go but I got mine for roughly $6200 with 108KM and completely stock with all maintenance records.
