Tonight was the first time I drove my Z in the snow and it was awful. Definitly wasnt used to braking and having the car turn 90 degrees. Anyway, what does everyone else use in snow....snow tires or sandbags in the trunk or something else?

Thanks,Lauren.

i turn off tcs and have some fun

but seriously, blizzaks front and back and it goes practically as good as a fwd car in the snow with tcs/vdc on.

i live in a rural area though, and am more than used to snow and pro drift.

my best advice, take up drifting, it helps tremendously when you lose control on snow.

Used tires...seriously?

And for $1200 I hope you're getting a kiss and some KY first. You shouldn't pay over a grand for a set of Blizz's - including mounting & balancing.

I just got a new set of blizzacks from discount tire. $700 mounted, balance & warrantied. They price matched tire rack + shipping.

I purchased a set of '06 17" 350z rims from a member on the local Z club for $200. They do fit over the Brembos. & I just ignore the stupid TPMS light.

For $1200 you got taken. Blizzacks are ~$150 for 17" rims.

In the winter, you want the smaller rim to allow more sidewall flex so more of the tire is in contact with the pavement. You also don't want to destroy your nice rims if you happen to hit a pot hole or slide into a curb.

The Blizzacks on ice drive better than the summer tires on wet pavement. The rear does not come around under braking, or step out upon acceleration. In the dry, they are nice, but you can't push them as hard.

You also need to learn how to drive on ice & snow.

No, it doesn't.

You know how you get better snow control? DON'T DRIVE LIKE A MANIAC. Drifting in the snow...wtf. You're the reason people have accidents in the snow and ice. You have NO control when your car is sliding across ice in any car (unless you have one that has ice skates for tires....)

KY is only for when you can't get the natrual lubes workin first

TN is Tennessee, check under my avatar, not Kentucky - is it even possible for you to read worse than you spell? Must be all that KY (jelly) talk that got you hot, bothered & confused.

Tire Rack prices are the same no matter where you go, and you can find a recommended installer right on their pages - $840 for a set of four. Let's remember - you still don't have a clue what you're talking about or have the ability to construct a valid argument.

In the interest of saving your Z from your winter driving - trying to go it during winter on your stock tires may be the worst idea you've ever had, or at least mentioned on here. Get new tires or leave it in the garage.

Trust me on this. you DO NOT want to drive the stock high performance SUMMER tires in the snow, on ice or in any temperature near freezing. If you think they were bad in the rain then prepare to be amazed. That rubber is only good once its warmed up. so all winter those babies will be slick as well, ice.

Xterra said it all. get a cheap set of 17" wheels if you don't already have 17s or don't mind spending at least $100 extra(each) for 18" low profile tires. get some winter tires (studless ice/snow or high performance winter) and you'll be fine.

i found some wheels for $300brand new Michelin X-ice Xi2 tires $600 (online and shipped to a local shop)Some places will hook you up with discounted or free mounting/balancing.

A set of 18" winter tires will run about $230-280 a pop. lets not forget it has to be a whole set. equal traction all around will keep you out of a ditch.

P.S. You can't drift if you're not moving

Those two are studless ice and snow. top speed is not very high at all. i know it sounds dumb to think of top speed when selecting snow tires but it means alot if you are doing alot of highway driving or live in a well plowed area. For instance, here in MA there will be a few thick a** snow storms in the middle but a large portion of my winter driving will most likely be on clear, wet or salty roads...and i like to speed. I highly recommend Dunlop Graspics, ii had those last season. they are high performance winter tires(rated to 149mph). I Didn't get the "squishy" disconnected feeling from those that i do now with the studless ice/snow tires. Although i am confident that these tires can handle deeper stuff i know it is far too easy to push them to their speed limit.

I should also add that i bought the "slower" tires because they were cheaper.

Best thing to do Park it for winter....Buy a beater that you can smash into garbadge cans and snow banks and such,,,Preferably a 4 wheel drive.... I live in Wisconsin and after last years Snow you can't convince me there is such a thing as Global Warming, and as far as this year has been going DITO!!!!! Winter doesn't start till December 20th...What the heck AL Gore????? Anyway sorry for the tangent......If you have to drive her go to Firestone or Tire Rack on Line and pick up some blizzy's They are the only tire worth buying.....Just remember though it isn't just the SNOW & ICE on the ground it's the FREEKING SALT that they dump that will eventually ruin any Vehicle....I just don't understand why they can't use sand like they used to.....Thats in Wisconsin anyway...... Embrace the winter and it will be over before you know it [IMG][/IMG]

Tirerack has always been good to me. shipping runs around 60 dollars for all four. It only took two days to get to my destination, which was a local NTB. They have a list of recommended installers in your area, and mounting prices listed for Tirerack customers at whichever shop you choose. if you order wheels as well they will mount/balance them for you before shipping. Mounting hardware like Centric rings is included too. Definitely a bolt-on situation. Town fair tire is good too if there is one in your area

i know what road salt can do to a vehicial over time, but the key phrase here is "over time"... id be willing to bet most of us here will have long since traded off to bigger (or smaller) & better rides by the time that would realistically happen... im sure the majority of us have enough faith in nissan engineering to assume theyve designed a car here that can stand up to 5 or 6 years of typical seasonal road salt without falling apart.... and if not, thats what warrentys are for im not saying its not a nice idea if you can afford it... im just saying enjoy the car you (or your parents) are paying for... i for one always like seein another Z on the road... and hey if you dont, when it gets sold off on barret jackson 35 years from now, someone else will!

I am not sure where it is you live, but in Wisconsin they dump enough salt on the roads you can actually taste it coming through your vents...Thats no Joke....I am a believer in hanging on to nice cars for a long time...I still have My 1974 Monte Carlo and she is cherry & the only reason she is I store her for winter. As far as who made any car... any metal loses to Salt it's physics thats all there is to say on that fact..... I don't believe in the throw it away concept...I have no choice but to run my Infiniti Stretch this winter but I just dread what winter is capable of doing to it. If you can't store it make sure you clean it, but salt will find it's way into the smallest of places..Why don't you ever see CHIP FOOSE restoring cars from the northern states? Because they ROT OUT.

ha, well.... 1974 was hardly 5 or 6 years ago! i had an 85 SS, which i loved & miss, but i wouldnt trade the Z for it at this point in time, no way, no how... i love my Z because, among other things, its a modern sports car. i know in 34 years, it probably wont be a modern sports car.

im sure its not near as bad down here, but we do get a good bit of salt on the roads here in indiana... still, ill be one of the die-hards out there puttin those seat heater to good use & chancin it

Jaye, what tires did you end up going with to help you cope with those central Indiana snows?

You should head over to Brown Co. during some light snow to test them out and snap some pics while you're there. Or if you're willing to drive the extra miles over to the Irish Lion in B'town.

damn straight, do miss hangin at the bloomington sites, but i never been to that one

its really not too bad here yet... i gotta play around in it a bit saturday but they salted the hell outta the roads in bartholomew county... but as far as tires, im still runnin on what i bought it with... (some cooper all seasons in the back & potenzas up front that are a bit more wore than im comfotable with for much longed lol) should have a set of anniversary wheels on the way here & im tryin to stick it out long enough to get those on & trade my stock 18s for somethin smaller to mount some winter rubber to. probably see what the local shops have to offer first...but if you know anyone in the area interested in 18s, hit me up man

What does living in NY have to do with internet pricing? Is there a special NY tax that gets added?

Retail is for suckers. Learn to haggle.
