i was having a little fun the other night on my way back from picking up perscriptions from the cvs downtown (after being released from the hospital) and i look in my rear view mirror and cant see. smoke (white) is completely filling the street behind me. now, it is hard to describe the sheer epic proportions of this.... think james bond's aston martin db5 times two. filled all 3 lanes of the road and went about 15 feet up. you COULD NOT SEE behind the car. there was a loud pop right before the smoke according to the 2 people in the car behind me, and the smoke started pitch black and then faded to a very light grey/white. it smelled like 2 stroke.

my oil pressure was fine (25lbs idle, 60 under load) and my temp was fine. car runs like a top. i have no idea what happened, but i am very afraid to drive my car until i figure it out. please help me!

I had a car do that exact same thing do that to me once. It was a 1986 Ford Tempo. There was an engine fire and it leaned way out and melted the #3 piston in half. It could also be the turbo. Check the compression and do a leakdown if you can. Get back to us with the results.

If its heavy white smoke, it sounds like coolant. Head gasket may have failed between the combustion chamber and a coolant passage.

if that was the case then there will be coolant in the oil and it should probably show up as milky white on your dipstick...

Not nessicarily. You can have a headgasket blow so that you are burning coolant, but still not have it leak into the oil.

Check that your crankcase breathers aren't blocked, hard to imagine why it would happen but it will cause this effect. Also is the turbo still OK?

Yea, thats what it sounds like to me. If your oil pressure and temp is fine, I'd say you blasted an oil seal. Right now, on my CA, if I let my car idle, it will smoke like a beast due to oil seals.

Do you have to rebulid and rebalance the turbo to replace the seals?

man, that turbo cant be dead. it doesnt have any play and its brand freaking new. i dont think i could have blown the head gasket because its a nismo 1.2mm metal gasket held down with arp fasteners.

ill do a compression and leakdown test today and let you guys know, but the car runs just as well as it always has so im not sure if anything is wrong. i got on it in 3rd yesterday and it didnt smoke or anything.

my dad thinks it could have been my stock ka24e cat going out on me (yeah, i know, i plan to replace it with a test pipe sooner or later) but it didnt smell like burning cat or anything. could have also been carbon and stuff burning up when the exhaust heated up a whole lot. im usually quite easy on the car, i never floor it completely and i never get on it for more than a few seconds. maybe my sustained high-rpm run burnt stuff up? i was running it through 4th and 5th at about 75% throttle. (about 3000-5500 in 4th and to about 4500 in 5th). i was shifting way early because i dont have adequate fuel pressure past about 6k as my stock fpr is failing.

"what doesn't kill it will only make it stronger"

I've heard people say that anyway.. I'm not sure it applied to cars.

Has the PCV valve been replaced? Mine was bad when I first got my CA and it would pressurize the crankcase enough to blow out the dipstick and make it spew oil. I changed the PCV valve and the tube going to my suction pipe of the turbo, and it stopped. The oil seals on turbo arne't very strong at all. They are basically just a flat disk that throws the oil away from the center shaft. If you get any kind of pressure on the backside of them, the oil will leak past.

Here it's partcode 11810

Incidentally, are you sure its the FPR and not the pump that its not getting enough pressure ?

no, im just guessing. i could crunk up the voltage to the pump, but i would like an adjustable fpr so i can fine tune the car better.

on a side note, ive had my foot in it for a week and it hasnt happened again.
