I have this theory..Which might be pretty dumb lol but my theory is i have an automatic V and i was wondering if its possible from shifting from gear 1 to gear 2 then to drive. The reason why was today i was driving with my friend and who has a stock 98 civic i think? not pretty sure. but he tried racing me and my other buddy in my car sed why not try the theory and i did and it worked in a way...but could it be safe which is my main concern..

Now... why would you want to do that to your automatic transmission???

definately a REALLY bad idea.... my friend has an 05 Mustang V6... he does that all the time... and his transmission is slipping... and its especially bad going back down in gears.... just stop the gas and it will revv higher... i would rather do that then risk my transmission slipping...

but i have a 6speed... only thing i need to worry about slipping is my foot off the clutch too fast =p

its bad to downshift to 2nd when in need to slow down?i thought that was better than using brakes on downhills!

Won't hurt anything unless you over-rev the motor and are smart with it (as you would be with a manual)

Downshifting is fine, too. Auto transmissions will only go into gear when they feel like it's "safe." For instance, if you move the lever to 1st at 75mph, the transmission will ignore you (I don't suggest trying this, though, just in case).

Manually shifting (or, rather, as it really is: manually dictating the highest gear you want the car to be able to choose) can be useful in a lot of situations. There's a reason a large number of modern automatic transmissions have with a manual shift mode.

My car's transmission is severely retarded (doesn't always drop into 1st after a full stop which means accelerating anemically in 2nd, doesn't respond to WOT like it should...) so I manually shift mine a lot of the time. It does not slip and is fine mechanically, but I'm also not stupid with it. I keep it in the gear I need when I need to and let it do it's thing when I don't. And I'd say it's a safe bet that my transmission is a lot weaker than the one in the Versa.

Thats true, before I got my manuel swap in my old 240 I was going about 50 and went to downshift into second but missed and it went into first....nothing happened to my amazement lol. I was also on the brakes and once the car got to about 35 it finally went into first gear. It scared me lol, I thought I was going to blow my engine.

Well the way i do it is i start on second then shift to first on about 5-6 rpm's then around 4-5 rpms i shift to drive...i mean nothing has happened so i guess ill just have to watch out and becareful. Sometimes i think about it and hate my dad for buying an auto...when i really wanted stick shift..

By the way...is there anyway to get the V have more horsepower besides having the intake and all of the normal stuff???

yeah.....engine swap lol. Dunno with what though.

And nothing should happen unless you over rev it. Ive done that once before, I was foolin around with my friend and went to go hit 4th but missed and hit 2nd....big mistake, over reved but as soon as I noticed it I pushed the clutch in so it was only in the red for maybe 2 seconds.

about the slowing down in 2nd... it may be better... but i just put the clutch in and use the brakes (anything to save gas!).... also... my friend is a total dumbass when it comes to the shifting... he does it to race... and just drives around all day like that... just DUMB. maybe thats why its slipping... or maybe its cause its a ford? =p

Again - something doesn't make sense to me; why would you do that with an automatic transmission? Getting the RPM high in P/N and then shifting into gear??

I think your old man is wise; the V is an econ car, not meant to be drag raced or driven like a sports sedan. When you've saved enough $ to buy anything you want - get a Mercedes Benz SLR. Oh wait... that's an auto too...
