Today my shifter would not come out of park unless I presssed the shift lock button. Additionally, the key will not return to the off position so I can remove it. The shift/lock fuse is good.

What might be the problem?

PROBLEM SOLVED: I reviewed the schematic for the shift/lock system in the repair manual. The shifter/lock is in the circuit with the tail and stop lamps. One of my 1157 bulbs had its contacts arc welded (typical Q) to each other causing the circuit to over load and blow the stop fuse, illumination fuse and shift/lock fuse. I replaced the bulb socket and bulb, as well as the fuses. Now everthing is back to normal.

Glad we could help (j/k). Amazing that a burnt bulb can cause the transmission not to shift.

Yes, it was the steel base bulb. I have used both steel and brass. I have had this arc welding issue no matter what I use. Usually the contact just melts but this time the melted to create one and too much resistance meant burning several fuses.

At one time I tried the LED bulds. The resistence was so low that the computer read them as being burnt/inoperative. They had to go.
