Any thoughts about using Rotella designed for HD diesel engines in the Q45? I'm told that it has many additives that are no longer allowed in "standard" auto oil that benefit the engine.

2 schools of thought:

In summer dirty engines wil benefit from the super high detrgent level and the stable nature of diesel oil.

While it has some xtra addives over gas engine oils many of those are unneed and go at expense of other things.Others prefer a valvolineSynPower 5w-40 for nearly eqular film thickness and kinda high detergent level.

I like th Rotell "T" Syn which is a great price for a true synthetic but still as a diesel oil I cannot "officially" recommed it on this site.

But it has a good rep on oil enthusiasts boards.Still I feel better oils exist for your car.

Try a search for "MB229.1"

the chemistry in th ecrankcase of diesel engines is vastly different than gasoline engines. While you may not experience drastic failure from using a 'diesel' engine oil for a while, it will not give you maximum engine life.

Diesel engines require extreme levels of dispersancy to keep all the soot in suspension. Also, the antiwear additive is significantly different--a zinc di-aryl dithiophosphate instead if zinc di-alky di thiophosphate The 'di-aryl' stuff works great in diesel engines, not so well in gasoline ones.

Stick with high quality multi-grade gasoline engine oils for your gasoline engines. Most of the 'high priced' ones are over priced for the 'benefits' advertised you may notice a lot is 'implied' in the advertizing, but little actually stated--actual statements have to be supported by facts.

From one who used to formulate and make the stuff.
