I saw on another thread in this new Detailing Forum, where one guy uses Dishwashing Soap (Dawn) and a Clay-bar on his EX35.

Dishwashing Soap on a Car ?

Using Clay on Self-healing Paint ?

Help me understand...

Dawn (blue) is what professional window cleaners use. Good tip for cleaning home windows. However, I have always heard that using dishwasher soap is bad idea for cars. It has agents in it that will strip the wax.

I am a fan of the the 3M car wash soap or HD Products soap (Charlotte, NC)

Yea, I've always read too, where you don't want to use Dish Soap to wash your vehicle with.

I wonder what it does to the Self-healing Paint.

Using a Clay-Bar on basically fluid Paint... what does that do for it ?

You only use Dawn before you wax the car. That's the purpose; remove grease, oils and wax as a prep-step to wax the car. Claybar removes other microscopic material from the paint that is not picked up via the car wash.

They just started putting it on some of the '08 models. It has a resin added to the paint which allows it to heal. For scratches, dependant on depth and outside temperature, they say it could heal itself within a week.

this paint seems pretty cool. don't know about using dishwasher soap though i think it'd take a long time to get all the soap off with water

You mix it in a bucket just like car soap.

Is there anywhere we can get a list or something like that with the paint codes/colors or anything?

I'd like to see if maybe they had something like it in satin black.

That I don't know, other than the current car colors on Infiniti vehicles.

Using the dish soap is to de-wax the car. I use it prior to claybarring. This allows the claybar to work on the paint directly instead of having the wax in the way.

The self healing paint basically seems to resist scratching all together by being flexible. It will take small linear dents (scratches) where the paint is not actually scratched off, then it will spring back over time.

And on another nissan forum it said its to resist against light scratches like if someone walks by and scrapes it with their jeans, maybe a knife clip or something? But not deep scratches and such.

So more like an elastic paint that just recovers "bruises" not scratches through the paint.

TOKYO (Dec. 2, 2005)-- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails.

“Scratch Guard Coat” contains a newly developed high elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car’s painted surface. With “Scratch Guard Coat” a car’s scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch.

The water-repellant paint also has a higher resistance to scratches compared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with “Scratch Guard Coat” will have only one-fifth the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint. Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces.

“Scratch Guard Coat” is effective for about three years.

“Scratch Guard Coat” will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future. The paint will be applied to the car’s chassis, bumpers, door mirrors, among other parts.

(scratched paint and paint 1 week later)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The above is the original release of the new resin system. In the article it states "effective for about three years" so I am not sure if the current paint system on the new Infiniti cars is an imporovement over the original or if it is indeed limited to 3 years.

Now, I'm sure if someone keyed your car and took off the paint down to bare metal then you will be screwed. I see this more for light scratches and swirl marks which makes it quite an improvement over the normal paint systems.

I know it's a older topic. I have a 08 G35 , now that it's 12 years later is it still soft or can I use a buffer to get out swirl marks & light scratches now?

you don't have the self healing paint on your 08 G35 right? yes you can use a DA machine to do paint correction and polish it for maximum shine. Then apply protection.
