Has anyone had a problem with the water ports in the block being erroded enough to cause a head gasket to leak coolant into the cylinder? I have the head off of one and it looks like that may be the problem with the water getting into the cylinder.

I have, gm's with dexcool, about 130-150k on original coolant. But for you I'd say the thermostat hung closed and caused your hg failure.
