I'm planning to rip a bunch of CD's to the 9gb music box in my '09 G37 sedan. I would like to do most of the ripping while the car is parked in the garage. What I'm afraid of is draining my battery. I've already drained it once by merely programming the garage door buttons. (This was not long after a dealer service in which my battery was tested and was declared fine.) According to my service adviser, it doesn't take much to drain the battery apparently....he said something like 20 minutes of listening to the audio can sometimes drain the battery, which is a little disconcerting to me.

Anyway my plan is to connect a battery charger to the battery while I'm ripping CD's. Specifically I have ordered this charger from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-02 ... 00068XCQU/. This charger is supposed to be smart and will automatically avoid overcharging.

Question: is there anything wrong/dangerous with my plan to have a battery charger hooked up while the ignition is in ACC mode and the CD player is ripping songs to the music box?

Thanks

p.s. according to my service adviser, before you jump start the car, you need to make sure that the ignition is in LOCK (off) mode. Otherwise you can somehow damage the car. When my battery died that one time, I was unable to get the ignition to change from ON to LOCK, so he advised me to disconnect and then reconnect the negative battery terminal, which puts the ignition back to LOCK. Which makes me think I need to store a 10mm wrench in my car just in case I need to do the same trick again sometime when I'm away from home.

I did the same thing with my 2009. After about 1 hour, it was drained enough to require a jump. Instead, I simply burned the CD's while on my way to-from work. It takes longer, but it will eventually get done.

As for the battery charger, I don't see anything wrong with it...other than paying for it. I haven't heard about the ignition LOCK warning...

Thanks Joe.

Well I am now in the process of ripping a bunch of CD's according to my plan....ignition off, connect battery charger, ignition to ACC, rip CD's for a few hours, disconnect battery charger, ignition off. All is working well. It seems to take 12-15 minutes per CD in most cases. I'm using the 105 kbps setting. Presumablly 132 kbps would take longer to rip.

Crank your car and let it run about every third or forth CD. It only took my car about 4 mins to rip one. As Joe suggested, I have about a 40 minute drive to work. I would have a stack of CDs in the seat next to me and just rip one right after the other. Didn't take me too many times to get it done.

Remember to leave your cell phone in the house. I was ripping some in my garage one day and my cell rang and the bluetooth kicked in and I had to walk way into the house to get it to disconnect.

When I was ripping CDs, I never ripped more than about 3 CDs each evening while parked and never had a battery problem. I also ripped CDs on the way to and from work. Following this pattern, I got 5 a day ripped and had all the music I wanted in the car (~100 CDs) in a couple weeks.

I don't think so. I ripped all of my CDs at 132kbps and they all took about 8-12 mins. I think CDs rip at about 6X regardless of which quality setting you choose.
