Resonators on exhaust?

I've been looking at exhausts and I've settled on the Bassani since I really like the look and sound and ease of install, but I don't understand the purpose of the resonators in the exhaust. Are they supposed to help make the exhaust note quieter? Might be a dumb question, but it never hurts to ask right? Thanks for all who reply.

I had the same question, so I asked my Muffler guy a few months ago. This is what he told me "The resonator is supposed to change the sound of the exhaust coming from the engine. Depending on the location of the resonater, it may quiet down the exhaust, or make it louder." I have no idea if this is true, it's only what he told me.

My resonater in my 240sx was cracked, I didn't have the money to buy a new one, so I just had it removed. My car now has a slightly louder and slightly deeper exhaust sound.

I have removed and added quite a few resonators on Z's...

They take the "rasp" out of the exhaust. The Z has a pretty bad rasp from 2500 to 4k rpm's without them.

Yeah thats what resonators are made for noise reduct, they are like extra mufflers.

Noise is in different frequencies....if 2 same frequencies traveling opposite directions hit each other they cancel each other out. Basically two cars same mass traveling same speed crash.. they both come to dead stop.

So a resonator is a attempt bounce some sound waves back to make it quieter, at a cost of lesser flowing exhaust.

I wish I can do a living. But I am currently a bum of a student finishing up my mechanical engineering degree.
