I'm trying to replace the alternator in my '96 I30t and it doesn't seem like there's any way to get the alt. out without removing the compressor. Is this the only way? Is there another way? I need to get this thing back on the road... So far we've unbolted the upper and lower bolts to the alt. but the compressor is in the way, there's no room between the wheel well and the engine. We can move the comp. slightly, but are uninterested in getting R-134a in our faces...any suggestions would be appreciated

You need to wiggle it out from the passengers side wheel. Much easier if you take off the wheel and leave the car on a jackstand. It is a royal PITA, but it will come out without removing the compressor. I'll pull up the FSM, and see if it says anything useful.

Cool thanks a lot. I'll try that out tonight, when I get back into it! What is FSM? F____ Service Manual? Just checking because all the parts stores around here have no manual for this vehicle...

Yes, factory service manual. I'll post up what I can later this afternoon.

Unfortunately the FSM doesn't have any info as to how it comes out. I know from changing mine, and other people's problems, that it comes out as described above.

If it's the same as the '99 location it isn't too bad. It's a fairly long job and I would do it with a second set of hands. I had to do it when I installed a high output alt. You don't need to remove the compressor completely. And the manual actually tells you to remove the radiator instead. But I wouldn't do it that way personally.

The trick we found that worked was pretty simple. Undo the bolts, hold it steady, etc. Second person attach some bungee cords (from above and wrapped around) so it can't drop or move quickly. Now you can let go, slide it to the side and get the old alt out and new alt in. Just use caution how much you wiggle it, don't put too much stress on the fluid lines.
