A while ago I did some engine work and while pulling the engine I hit the A/C line near the firewall causing it to start leaking at the joint.

Well the weather is warming up again and I figure I should actually try to get A/C working and was wondering if I can just replace the line and recharge the system without doing anything else.

I'm still running an R12 system and have the ability to get R12 to recharge, I just don't know enough about the system itself to know if there are any additional steps I need to take, or if I can just replace the line and recharge.

Thanks.

By recharge do you mean buying a can from orielly's and spraying it in? Because if so, PLEASE DONT! You need a machine that has the ability to put a vacuum on the system to pull out all the moisture and oxygen, and then fill it with 100% pure R12. If this is what you were doing... Then carry on.

The cans you buy at the auto parts stores add R12 on top of the air that is in the system, but don't remove the air. So they have a really impure charge, and the AC wont work very well. On top of that, most of those cans have a sealing agent that activates when it hits moisture. If the system has been apart, it is full of air and moisture, so until you get a vacuum on it to pull all the air and moisture out, the lines are filled with moisture, and will cause the "Stop leak" to "stop flow". It will literally just fill your AC system with sealer and it might not work at all anymore.

If you don't have the machine to do it, I would recommend bringing it to a shop. The machines are very expensive, and unless there is some new tool to hold a vacuum on the line while you add the stuff from the can in, you will only make a mess.

If the OP has access to R12 I'm guessing he or someone knows what they are doing, the stuff you buy at the parts store is R134a which is not compatible with R12. You don't have to pull a vacuum, you can purge one side as you charge if you have a manifold, It's what I've always done.

That being said, R134a is cheap and available and if the system is empty now is a great time to make the change, I recommend you change the receiver drier at the same time and change out all the O rings for nitrile while you are at it.

Your sest bet is to go on the Infiniti Q forums to ask. Either way I'm sure you can replace just the bearing if you can find it. It's a lot easier to replace the whole compressor though. especially if you already have the compressor out.

Thanks sorry I thought I was on that form. I know where the a/c unit is. I've heard both that u can do just the bearing and that u can't have to replace the whole thing. The bearing cost me 16$ and the whole unit is over 200.
