Greetings!

I've been lurking here for a few months and just decided to start posting any silly questions I may have. :rotfl

Anywho I'm rebuiling a 93 N/A and noticed and long story short found a slight oil leak coming from the front of the engine (I haven't traced it yet).

Unfortunately it looks like a good amount got onto (if not into) the alternator. Now anyone I ask "is this a problem?" gives a different answer but from what I can tell it's probably the original alternator (everything else I've taken out has been stock so far) and will probably have to replace it at some time.

Now this is my first Nissan, let alone my first Z and I was planning on tossing a sound system into my car. I figured this was pretty standard since I found custom 2x 10'' sub enclosures/etc... on other enthusiast sites.

My only question is can 80amps even power a moderate amplifier/sub/speakers? I can't seem to find a straight answer on what they're using, yet alone where to find an alternator that can put out more than 80amp or even what brand to go w/ since all the ones I've found are Remanu.

If anyone could offer some insight on the Alternator(s) side of things I'd be beyond grateful :D

Stock 80-amp alternator is pushing it with a sound system, depending on what you're running. You can replace it with a stock TT alternator which is rated at 90-amps, direct plug & play, but not sure if thats enough either depending. A few guys are running 140-amp high output ones, not sure what brand but here's one I found on Amazon (kinda pricey):

Anyway, oil shouldn't be dripping onto your alternator. Even if it still works, it will eventually stop working if it works its way into the internals of the alternator. When you finally get down to tracing where the leak is, make sure it isn't actually power steering fluid (the P/S pump sits literally directly above the alternator). Another possibility is leaky valve cover gaskets, especially if they've never been changed.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'll probably get my Daily Driver (Lincoln) back up and running for work so I can put some extra effort into this car. I'm pretty sure you're right about the valve covers leaking. I double checked the color/cosistency and I'm 99% it's oil. Oddly enough I don't have any dripping on my driveway and my oil pressure/levels seem to be pretty consistent and normal.

Anywho, I was planning on running an Alpine 3-channel Amp. It has a couple of different configurations but basically it'll be 2 channels @ 100w RMS and 1 mono channel @ 300w RMS. Nothing too fancy just gonna have it driving some 6.5'' speakers in the back plus a decent subwoofer (if possible)

Whats confusing is I've seen other forum posts where people claim they're running 1200w DUAL subs off the OEM 80amp Alternator which is rather perplexing. Then again this is my first 300 and I'm not familiar with it at all.

Thanks again!

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR. I HAVE A BRAND NEW ONE THAT PUTS OUT MORE THAN 120 AMPS.

Considering his post was from 2 years ago, he probably already found a solution for it "94TT."
