I have recently had a u-joint go on my 1991 hardbody d21 Longbox pick-up. Took it to the dealership today and I was told that in order to change the u-joint I need a completely new driveshaft. I have a cousin who is a mechanic and I asked him and he said he has never heard of having to replace a complete driveshaft to change a u-joint. I was wondering if anyone has any more ainfo on this. I don't have a lot of money and need to keep the truck running but don't want to get screwed by a dealer (they wanted $950 for a new driveshaft.) Do I really need to replace my whole driveshaft? Thanks

U-joints are replaceable. Never heard of it either. The dealerships techs must be a bunch of pretty boys not wanting to get grungy changing out a ujoint. Fleetpride is a nationwide chain that can replace your joint and re-balance your driveshaft if need be.

Google Rockford Drive Line they make u joints for staked drive lines. You need to measure the size. My 1991 2 wheel drive uses a 430-12. Cost me about $30 through Six States Distributors.

It may not be the techs, but the parts department. Sometimes the u-joints won't come up in the system correctly with the VIN in, or they will say "AR" instead of a quantity. For departments that haven't dealt with this, it can be confusing. The u-joints should be available through the dealer.
