Any suggestions on how to get the rack out of a 1996 j30?

I have a FSM. I have read everything I could find here.
I have it all disconnected and loose- that was easy..
But I cant seem to twist it around the frame?

I will try again tomorrow.. but wtf?

Let me know if you have done it.. and have some words of wisdom.

Thanks!

Welll.. I don't think it is "drop the sub-frame"

I dropped it as much as I could without pulling the entire f-ing thing to pieces... and I still cant get around the transmission.

Anybody got ideas?

Next is dismantle the rack in place?.. but that makes me uncomfortable . . .

OK!
Everyone relax- I got it out.
I removed the hard lines attached to the rack and it slipped out.
A shame, cuz my replacement has them all coated in place... but meh.

So when you put the replacement back on you took the hardlines off and put them back on

Hello alienhead626, welcome to NICO!

As you noticed, we already have an open thread on removing the rack and pinion from a first gen J30. I've merged your thread with the original.

Hello!
On my '96, that was exactly what I had to do- put the hard lines back on in place. It made it easy, though.

If you must.
I got mine out with some gentle twisting. It wasn't hard.. but maybe you have something weird going on.

Hey camm, I know it's been a minute since you replaced your rack and pinion, however; I just wanted to know if it was also easier to leave the hardlines off until you reinstalled the rack or did you reinstall the hardlines while it was still off the car?

Hey!
I had to install them once the rack was in place.

To anybody else who may be a future rack R&R candidate - I got 93 J30 , bought with 67k mi , and have flushed the rack 6+ times already , car has 280k mi , flushed like every 30-45k . Rack is like the day I bought it. I learned from an Oldsmobile hand me down that had tight steering on startup - had to completely warm up before you had " lock to lock".The Olds , my dad's had 160kmi doing this. Fresh fluid really does keep them up , and y'all probly don't have to be as anal as me doing so many flushes too .
Fluid = Factory ' Nissan D ' fluid from the dealer & no need to user sealers , conditioners & snake oil,
or any close to the D-spec aftermarket . DEALER 'D' !!!!! y'all. Double -D . DD !
