Im in the process of removing the top/pivot bolt from the alternator but Ive been turning it for over half an hour straight and it doesnt feel like Im getting anywhere. This small nut/bracket fell off after a few minutes turning but now 40 minutes later and Im still turning the bolt. Is there something else I should be doing?

for alternators in general, I usually need to bash out the bolt from the back. there's only a small bit of thread to hold the bolt but its very long, so turning it wont remove it. you've probably undone the bolt by now but its still held in place under tension. all the years of dirt and grime really add to the friction so sliding out the bolt often isnt an option and solvents definitely arnt an option to clean or lubricate the sleeve. so out comes a gentle persuader. a random picture from the internet but you get the idea.

Oh ok well yeah i tried pulling it but it wouldnt budge. Ill have to push it out but the tiny spaces to work in are ridiculous on these cars. At least on my RX-7 the alternator is right on top of everything so I can take it out in 2 minutes. Different story with a Z32.

For me this is like the equivalent of replacing a water pump on an RX-7 FC which is easy but more work.

Just pulled mine today. Took about 30 mins. for that top bolt maybe I was lucky but for the last couple days I have been squirting a little Kriol on it every day. it came out easy. I had all the other bolts and such off, unbolted that one and then tapped the bottom of the alt with a rubber mallet while wiggeling it back and forth and was able to get the bolt to slide out without to much fuss. Hardest part for me was the plastic conector and then figuring out how to drop the disconnected alternator out of the bottom of the car.

I wasnt aware of a double post. Sorry about that. I posted from my phone and sometimes pressing submit does nothing so I must have pressed it multiple times.

Finally took out the dead alternator and put in a new one. What a project that was. Im glad I dont own a Z32. The spaces around the engine are nonexistent. Thanks everyone.

Then you DEFINITELY would not like working on a TT.
Congrats on the success, BTW!

Lol I would probably give up in frustration if a TT has even less space. These cars make working on my RX-7 Turbo II feel like preschool difficulty. Thanks though :)
