You're right. That is an expensive option at your dealer. However, there are troubles with after market remote starts. Usually, they require you to carry an extra remote or use your mobile phone to start the car. Also, there is the issue of warranty - you could void your warranty with an after market system. Having it done at the dealer might be the best option.
As a side note: My dealer here in Florida has stopped offering the Inifniti remote start (using the existing key fob) and they have also stopped installing after market brand remote start. I was told there were electrical problems caused by OEM and after market systems after time passed. Not sure if that was due to them not knowing how to do it properly, or if it is just an issue with the system itself.
