Story:
Having realized that my brake light went out I went to replace it. Being the PITA that it is, I've managed to take out the nuts without using a deep socket. Replaced the light then went to screwing the nuts back on. Managed to put them on and then *clunk.... Down goes the socket in the panel.

I believe it is between the car panel and the plastic panel (in the trunk). Anyone know how to take the plastic panel off? I searched and searched. No luck. I decided to ask here because I honestly don't feel like buying the maintenance book as of the moment.

A quote from the service manual:

"It is not necessary to remove the luggage side finisher. Doing so may render the part damaged or unusable." Now, after having looked at mine, it seems that a good body guy with the right [fiberglass] tools should be able to get the thing out.

You'd want to be especially careful around the vent.

This sounds like the socket is down inside your quarter panel.

You should be able to buy a magnetic pickup device at most auto stores or a Sears.
Get it in there and get the socket out.

If that doesn't work, and the rattle really bothers you, you could pour in a pound or 2 of molasses to keep it from moving.

If you work in inaccessible places, you can magnetize your sockets with a tool for that purpose, or you can buy magnetic inserts for your sockets.

Somewhere on this forum, there is a link to the service manual, but it won't have any more than I've written.

Good luck.
