I searched and never really found any concrete answers. My friend recently aquired a beat to s*** Z31 he wants to fix up and what not. He needs a door and was going to try and get it running, but it doesn't idle and when it is idling, it sounds like it has a rod knock. So heres the question:

RB20 into Z31, any good info/advice? hes on a big budget, which is why i mentioned the RB20. Do the mounts and driveshaft line up? I did find that in Japan, the Z31 were offered with RB20's in stock form. Any info on wiring is GREATLY appreciated.

He said he'd like to rebuild it, but with how old it is and just some of the things under the hood, it doesn't seem practical to me. But I also own a CA18 240sx soo lol Thanks for reading and any help you can give me/us is appreciated. Thanks Classic Z residents!

If he's on a big budget, go for anything besides an RB20. Go with an LS1, LS2, LS6, RB26DETT, VG30DETT, VG33ER, VG33ET, etc. The RB20 is a tiny motor that will never reach the potential of one of these other options. But you might want to redefine "big budget".

The only motors that will swap in easily and line up are the SOHC VG motors. With these, you can use the stock transmission and won't have any issues with mounts and driveshafts. ALL other motor will require custom driveshaft and engine/transmission mounts.

For the best bang for the buck, you can drop in a small block V8 and have it running for under a grand. But this will require custom mounts and driveshaft and a lot of labor hours. So if you can't do the work yourself, it will cost a lot more.

For the easiest swap, you can drop in a VG33 you find out of a pathfinder, xterra, villager, frontier, etc.
