Rattling is so bad that I am afraid to rev it past 3600

sounds like rods. does it sound thick? I mean if you baned a wrench on an anvil vs a ballpeen hammer? a light sound might be lifters, heavy sound would likely be rods. The CA is infamous for the rod knock.

personally i am a CA rod knock connoisseur. ive heard my car do it more times than i care to count/remember. check the oil. its probably out or something. mine would run out of oil mysteriously on highway trips but when i put 4 quarts in (was usually dry) it would always stop. when i took the engine apart it had virtually no wear on the bearings.

sounds like rod bearings though. go to auto zone and get some clevite 77 bearings for a ca18de for $4 each and your car will be a hoss in no time. would probably take the opportunity to change the mains and a lot of gaskets as well. rings wouldnt be a really bad idea either (but youll have to go to advance auto for those)

themadscientist: I would say frequency of rattling differs from lifters...r34: it's a "spares" car and I will try to change rod bearings with the engine in the car, no rebuilding

you guys with the "in-the-car" bearing changes. It seems like doing a tooth filling via the ear.

I still think there are better ways to spend money than rebuilding engine everytime any single part wears off

true, but ive only done it once and it needed some parts other than just the rod bearings. its just kind of unnerving when something like rod bearings wear out because there is a high chance that something else is fooked too.

my car is rattling on at every rpm but i think its my lifter im not very sure. It would be cool to have a selection of CA18 engine sounds. Some with rod knock or lifter problem ..bearing etc etc

Ill try to record sound from my engine for everyone, maybe im just crazy and that how a normal 15 years old engine sound

Hey Hey mad, I've doe it on a couple of instances and got away with it. But that's just like playing russian roulette with 4 rounds in the drum . Sounds like your rod bearings have reached their maximum wear. Go ahead and pull the engine now, so you don't spoil your crank. Keep driving it and you're repair bill gets bigger.

I like the idea of sound files though. I remember a Supra board had the sound of the secondary turbo death whine, creepy sound. Basically though if the banging makes you feel ill it sounds so bad that is usually a rod
