Why do you think the S is not 'checked' by CR as opposed to the SL?

Guess #1 would be that they like the packaging and features of the SL better.

Guess #2 is that they like the CVT better.

The thing Consumer Reports (I subscribe) doesn't tell you is they only rate cars they test drive (evaluate). They didn't test the Sedan. Rather then make a notation that they didn't test drive it - they just don't check it. Interesting isn't it?

They show for the 2007 Hatchback (not Sedan - they didn't track the Sedan)...

RELIABILITY1 to 5 (5 Excellent, 4 Very Good, 3 Good, 2 Fair and 1 Good).

5 for Engine Major, Engine Cooling, Transmission Major, Transmission Minor, Drive System, Engine Minor and Electrical System.

3 for Fuel System

RATINGS REPORT CARD1 to 5 (5 Excellent, 4 Very Good, 3 Good, 2 Fair and 1 Good).

5 for Owner Costs4 for Fuel economy, Ride, Front seat comfort and Crash protect3 for Acceleration, Predicted reliability, Owner satisfaction and Accident avoidance

CR MODEL SUMMARYNissan's entry-level car is available as a hatchback or sedan. It packs an impressively roomy rear seat, and the tall roof line allows easy access. The 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine is relatively refined, but needs to be revved to deliver power. The standard six-speed manual is a bit clunky, and a continuously variable transmission is optional. Fuel economy is good, but not a standout at 28 mpg for the CVT. The ride is relatively comfortable and quiet, but handling isn't particularly agile. Curtain air bags are standard, but cars with the optional antilock brakes can be difficult to find. First-year reliability has been average.
