Been doing some research because I need to do the same. You get a lot of different opinions out there. My AC doesn't work at all so I need to charge it and check for leaks.

What I've done so far is get a 1994+ condenser, a new dryer and a new o ring kit. The newer condenser is supposed to be a little bigger since 134a isn't as efficient as r12, and I think there's a relief valve that needs changing since 134a runs at higher pressure.

I'm debating whether to do 134a or this.

This stuff is supposed to work at lower pressure more like r12 so maybe the compressor and seals would live longer.

When I had my NA, I converted r12 to 134a. Honestly all I did was replace all the o-rings, dryer, used the retro kit for the inlet ports, and replaced pag oil. I evacuated the system and charged it following the ambient temps on charts. Do not rely on "a certain amount", but I think I used just a little over 2 12oz cans. I think, please don't quote me on the amount, it as a good 5 yrs ago. I used this chart, has never failed me.

It worked well for Phoenix temps, only didn't cool when the electric fan was not running or I was not moving. Do not overfill, it will not cool. Do not add too much oil or it will not cool. The r-12 condenser is not as efficient and stated so it will not get to temps as most ac systems do, but it should cool enough to make it comfortable.

If the systme has been open for some time, it is best to do an internal clean/flush. Autoparts stores has what you need in a can, and yes, it works well. I just cannot remember the name of the product.
