You keep the key in your pocket, briefcase, purse, etc... When you approach a front door or liftgate with the key on you, you press the little rubber button to unlock the car. (Or, you can do it the old-fashioned way and press the unlock button on the keyfob.) When you get inside the car, you turn the ignition -- without the key inserted -- to start the car. You do not have to remove the key from your purse or pocket, etc....

Or you can go REALLY old fashioned and slide the mechanical key out of the back of the intelligent key and unlock the (front driver side) door with that. You can also start the car with the mechanical key (if your intelligent key battery is dead, for example)
