I am putting on some new injectors for a 92 Q. On installation is it better to use force to get them back in or a form of lubrication? This is pertaining to the bigger of the two o-rings. I was thinking of just using a little gasoline, but I don't know if that will compromise the integrity of the o-ring.l

The instructions in the manual are a bit vague.

We have to hope that gasoline won't compromise the integrity of the injector o-rings! Guys have used oil, grease, dielectric paste, vaseline, KY, and other stuff. There's been concern that vaseline would degrade the o-rings, but I don't know if that's true or not.

p.s. I have already put one of them in by just pushing it down and then letting the metal cover do the rest. It just didn't feel right though.

I have silicone spray. go or no-go for launch?

thanks daedalus. I can always count on you for a quick and effective response. It is lube time.

Yeah, it never does "feel right"...always a bit of springiness from the rings. A big leak will be obvious; it's the little ones that are a problem. You're probably fine if you're careful.

The type of "rubber"o-ring is resistant to even methyl chloride. Buna, Viton -I think it was some thing else, any one know?A friends nephew used neoprene o-rings out of a box and in about 2-3 months he wondered where the gas smell was coming from all the time. Vaseline works the best.

I would recommend lubricating both o-rings. I think di-electric grease would be the overall safest bet, but I used Vaseline on the installation for "Q1" back in 1998 with no problems. Keep in mind that a pinched lower o-ring can cause flooding on that cylinder as the rail dumps lot's of fuel in there and can cause hydrolocking. The upper will cause fuel leaks in the engine bay...

Another hint... TJ (Joe's predecessor) had a nice supply of hex head screws to replace those d@%n phillips head screws that strip out so easily on the injector covers. I'm sure you can also source them locally. Makes life a lot easier!

I replaced several of the screws in my recent sunroof project with allen head screws, mostly because that's what I could find at the Lowes that I visited that day. Those screw heads on the motor, and the ones that hold the frame that supports the sunroof switch are really easy to strip! Some of the threads were stripped by the tech. that replaced the motor back in 1991 too. My only concern is that the car will have an identity crisis now - with all of those allen head screws the info cluster may start saying "Achtung! Fuel Low" :D
